Yeah, it does! If I buy a burger for a set price from you, and you give it to me, I'm in debit to you for the price of the burger. They legally can not stop accepting cash for debits. If you want to pay them in pennies, then they legally have to take it.
Legally this is gonna get very interesting very quick.
If we apply the same logic that liberals due to voter id, this is an incredibly "racist" practice. Far moreso than voter id because at least people can get a free id.
All of the poorest people I know don't have two things: phones and/or credit/debit cards. The photo id at least comes and goes as they lose it and someone helps to get them a new one.
This is tough on some of the older population both my elderly father and my aunt don't carry debit cards. They use cash everywhere and an occasional check. My dad still shows up with a check or cash to pay many of his bills in person. I will never hear the end of his rants if he can't do this. Not that I disagree with him!
I have heard that too. I also recall if they refuse the debt is canceled. I think some of the people should give that a try just to test their response.
they insist on the co payment prior to any work being done. dont have the $25, dont get the tests or what ever preformed. "legal tender for all debts, public and private". ya, right.
Let's say a doctor's appointment eats up 45 minutes of office time (I couldn't decide between 30 and sixty minutes, so let's split the difference).
Take a normal 9-5 work day (which is being generous). That's eight hours of office time.
Remove one hour for lunch: seven hours of office time.
7*60 is 420 minutes. This isn't reddit, so save the memes.
420/45 is nine and a third appointments. We'll just round down to nine for basic administration tasks, opening and closing things, etc.
A guy with eight friends could fail to attend appointments for an entire work day because gosh darn it, I'm waiting for a new credit card after my last one was used for fraudulent brothel visits in The Strip in Vegas. That guy's debit card expired last month and he didn't realize it until now. That third guy's bank just went under so he's waiting on a cashier's check. Dude behind him only deals in cash, so he's never had a bank card.
They don't want to handle all the protocol to have cash in the building reconcile it daily and transfer it to a bank. They always start this crap out where they know they can
I had a cashier tell me a few weeks ago that she hates taking cash because she has to count it, count her drawer, and she has to make bank runs which take 30 minutes where I live.
I told her that we need it to avoid a CBDC. Of course she didn't understand.
Why aren't businesses obligated to take cash? Isn't it legal tender for all debts?
They sure as hell should be.
Only if it is a debt. Ordering a burger, for example, does not represent a debt.
Sure it does. The burger is made before you pay, therefore you have an obligation to pay the debt you accrued.

Probably a near precursor to a UBI.
I don't carry credit cards and have no debit card. I guess I'd have to take my business elsewhere.
Hmmm......this US $1 bill says, "This Note Is Legal Tender For All Debts, Public and Private."
Can't wait to see the first lawsuit.
I hope people have already contacted the state regulators since most of them take this stuff seriously.

I bet they'd cave if you told them you didn't have a credit card.
They take your billing info up front.
Get together with some bored friends.
Make appointments back to back, day after day.
Have no plastic with you.
???
Profit!
I don't want to be caught in a medical facility if I can help it. They'd still find some way to bill you too.
But, of course. 🙄
100%
Especially AFTER services are rendered, which is usually when I have paid.
government fiat currency must be accepted for discharge of any debt, refusing to accept it can be seen as forgiving your debt.
Any place that is adverse to taking cash can now enjoy having less of it.
As I recall all businesses must accept cash in the United States by law. I have no idea where this is located.

You and a few friends making appointments and not having a credit card could be an interesting time.
if by a few you mean a few hundred...

And on and on. We'll all just have to reschedule.
There are restaurants that haven't taken cash for decades. It's not a law.

A fellow Hoosier?
yup
Maybe offer to pay in "pure" blood?
Should be a premium product down the line.
Reminder there is nothing they can do with CBDC that they can't already do now.
Tell them where they can stick it.
What if the reason they dont accept cash is because their staff cant count add/subtract/calculate it or the change back.
Read a post recently where a woman paid cash for groceries and the cashier didnt know how to give change and called supervisor for help.
How do homeless people pay if they need service?
And we don't like them. Don't go.
How can they not accept cash?? Isn’t it legal tender?
The phrase is " all of a sudden".
