I've got an old poker buddy around 30yrs ago was up for captain at the Fire Dept in a large city, his test results were among the highest grade's in his precinct,he was really excited one friday night we were playing poker,it was usually around 8 of us that played in my garage/mancave every friday night,we were all really happy for him and hoping he would get the job,it was a lot more money,we'll the next friday night he came in really pissed and didn't get the captain's position and said a black guy with lower test grades got the job ,he quit later that year.
I had a student at a community college whose father was Hispanic. He legally changed his first name from Arturo to Arthur. He did not want to be considered as a minority group member. When he went to the Registrar's office to show them his name change - they said to him "What, you don't want to use the Hispanic card?" He was ambitious and wanted to compete based on merit. Nice guy.
My wife works for a Dept of Ed govt contractor. They service and collect student loans.
They are bombarded with hiring unqualified Blacks over very qualified Whites ALL THE TIME. Govt work is a different World than private.
Another data point in the thesis that the people who are most opposed to affirmative action are competent and skilled members of minority groups.
Yep, because it devalues their earned skillset and sets them up for a career with constant assumptions of being a token hire. I see it all the time in the construction biz
When our daughter was looking to apply to colleges back in the early 2000’s she looked at a wide variety of schools. She was a swimmer. She could have swum in any of the athletic divisions including the mid major D1 schools like the Ivies. She would have gotten in early decision there based on her times if she had contacted any one of the swim coaches ahead of time. She had both the academics and the swim talent.
So it’s not just people of color who get into Ivies, but they probably get in at a greater rate. They also have a number of reserved slots for athletes, musicians, alumni children and kids with other specialties.
However, she didn’t apply to any Ivy. She passed on multiple scholarships (much to our chagrin) to go to a small private college. (No scholarship but as an only child we had saved enough for her to attend). It was a very good fit for it.
One of the parents of a friend on her swim team worked at an Ivy League school. She said the college my daughter (and her daughter) attended was much more challenging than any of the Ivies. She said the Ivies are notorious for grade inflation. Handing out mostly A’s and B’s for all the students. The hardest thing about them was getting into the Ivies but once you get in it is very hard to fail as long as you went to class and did the work assigned.
The Ivies are overrated and overhyped. There are a lot of good colleges and universities out there where your kid can get a better education including many of the state schools. As long as they select a degree program that can actually get them a job when they graduate.
i had a poll person call me the other day and ask me some questions. one of them was what race i am, she said Caucasian, black, Asian? i said American. she paused, then said, so 'other'. i hung up on her.

Anyone who sends their kids to Harvard is insane.
Reminds me of one of u/Uncle_Fester's Sunday Funnies.
Guy's in a job interview, and the interviewer says: "This is the place one usually lists college, but you left it blank.
Guy says nothing. So the interviewer says: "You went to Harvard?"
And the guy hangs his head in shame. Too funny!

IMO, Ivy = indoctrinated. glad your daughter didn't attend any Ivy.
It’s not just the ivies that are indoctrination sites. They pretty much all are these days ImHO
very true. but seems the most evil ones come from the Ivy.
Respectfully disagree with your thesis. Competent and skilled people also play the race game. It's a question of character more than skill.
My go to with some of my black buddies: they laugh every time. The younger ones I have to indoctrinate them into Lethal Weapon 2 quips:
