Well these weren't out of the box pagers. They were certainly modified with a little bit of explosives added in them and a special triggering device.
Modern pagers only use one AA or AAA battery And there's not a lot you can do to make those explode typically (unless the batteries that came with these devices had explosives in them)
This was a well-planned and precisely executed operation that's passed out pagers that were completely functional that likely triggered explosives upon a special signal received.
The same signal was sent out to all of them at the same time. Most of the explosions happened at the same time with some later explosions from devices that were outside of signal range or perhaps malfunctioned.

I agree BTW - those batteries don't have the energy density to explode like that. Definitely modified to function normally AND probably using a custom SMD and miniaturized board with room for some kind of plastique payload... plus like an N sized 12v battery for the detonator... I don't think you'd get a 1.5v AAA to spark enough to set it off....
Upon reviewing the videos of exploding pagers, I agree that the explosions are too big for just having the battery overheat and explode that way.
More than likely, Israel or some other COIN organization gotten wind of Hezzy ordering pagers for their personnel, managed to intercept the order, and replace all the pagers with ones that are engineered to still be functional while being rigged to explode (with plastic explosives, circuitry, programming, etc.) with Hezzy not noticing something was wrong.
While there is a risk of phones blowing up, what I see here suggests a specifically engineered device that looks and acts like a pager, but has explosive bobby trap parts. So if you are worried about the government blowing up you via your phone, I'd not worry unless you are sure that the government planted C4 in your smartphone.

I don't think it is the lithium batteries alone that exploded (at least I hope that is true). They must have been rigged with small explosives. Lithium batteries are bad enough in terms of a fire hazard, toxic manufacturing processes, etc. without adding controlled detonation to their already long list of problems.
You can still easily be tracked with any type of cellular phone via Tower pinging.
The spying thing is another matter entirely. You can use lineage OS on a compatible Android phone to strip out all the Google background stuff and run a basic clean OS but there's still likely hardware backdoors built into every piece of hardware out there.

I heard that the lithium batteries were painted with explosives, then the pager was triggered to heat the batteries, then they exploded.
Some people were quick enough to toss them as soon as they warmed up so they were not hurt.
