I dont think it is necessarily a dumb rule just an inconsistent one. Who wants to be assaulted by electioneering as they are standing in line to vote? Wearing candidate swag just gets caught up in the larger rule in some States. These laws work to discourage voter intimidation -- for the most part.
Every State is different. Some States require 25 feet distance from the front door. Others 25 feet from the last person in line. Louisiana is 600 feet from the building. Not all States specifically prohibit clothing. South Carolina does not. My State of Michigan also does not specify.
I voted in Michigan last Saturday with my Trump button on my shirt and nobody said a thing. I did not wear my MAGA hat but my truck had my Trump flags in the back window and I was parked 30 feet from the door. There was a lady from the County Republicans with signs posted at the entrance to my Township Hall parking lot that is definitely less than 100 feet away but not by a whole lot.

SCOTUS has made it clear states cannot limit our 1A rights. Wearing political gear is part of the expression of your 1A.
I'm in a state where it's "illegal" to wear political slogans within 100 feet of polling stations. I've voted in the last 3 elections wearing political gear, I early voted this election wearing a MAGA hat. I had no problems whatsoever despite signs being all over the place saying it wasn't allowed.
Trying to supercede the constitution is what's really illegal, and it's our duty as Americans to not abide.
In NC we as poll workers can't wear political attire. But if you have on full Trump regallia or otherwise when you come in to vote we let you vote that way,
However, NO ONE including voters are allowed to talk politics in the voting precinct. So we do remind people to not speak and if anyone leaves a party cheat sheet in the voting booth we have to remove it immediately for any other voters who may come in there.
