Agreed. We've had SAMs installed for decades in many places. Additionally, we've had mobile SAMs able to deploy for even longer. No accelerate the tech to today's standards... we don't need an iron dome, most likely have a very fluid array of capabilities already in place.
A non-starter. It was recognized in the 70s that an engagement against a re-entry vehicle would be meaningless. The RV is already designed to survive an intense thermal environment and the hypersonic shockwave would blur the beam spot. Plus, it could work only in cloudless skies.
The problem with the iron dome is those missiles cost ~50k a piece while the rockets they protect are a lot cheaper, so in a war of attrition a cheaper alternative would be desirable.
I feel like this is a lead up to a reveal that there’s a reason why most of the world has been shifting massive amounts of money in modernization, overhauls and Military Buildups. Or making plans too. And it’s not for the reasons we’re told it is. IE the Russians/Chinese.
Parts of the Ukraine Aid Bills have gone towards improving Domestic Production Capacity for Military hardware. Factory expansions, overhauls and automation of production lines etc. Work that as best as I’ve been able to tell. Actually occurred. So it wasn’t entirely another way to siphon off money.
And the improved capacity isn’t going to vanish anytime soon.
President Ronald Reagan bluffed the Russians into thinking we had some like this. I belive this is a contiuation of "The Star Wars Program".
On March 23, 1983 in a televised address to the nation, President Ronald Reagan announced his intention to embark upon groundbreaking research into a national defense system that could make nuclear weapons obsolete, called the Strategic Defense Initiative, or SDI. The heart of the SDI program was a plan to develop a space-based missile defense program that could protect the country from a large-scale nuclear attack. The media quickly began calling the program “Star Wars,” since it seemed as impossible as the events of a galaxy far, far away.
With SDI, President Reagan was able to unleash America’s entrepreneurial spirit. The project ultimately helped end the Cold War. It not only revolutionized the way we think about missile defense, but also led to significant advancements in other areas of technology such as satellite surveillance and communications. America and allies around the world benefit from it today. https://www.reaganlibrary.gov/upcoming-exhibit/star-wars-and-sdi-defending-american-and-galexy
I did their budget one year and helped one of the divisions for a while. I was a bit pissed about how much money was wasted on studying and modeling droplet sizes for a biological warhead.
Be advised that "Iron Dome" is the name given by the Israelis to their integrated, multi-level air and missile defense system. A collection of weapons comprise the system, notably the Arrow 1, 2, and 3 missiles, for which U.S. contractors have been supplying components.
The U.S. used to have dedicated strategic air defenses (missiles and interceptors) but let them all lapse from the 1970s on. Now, all comparable systems are allocated to tactical combat roles. We would need fixed-site missiles, possibly based on the Navy Standard missile family, and dedicated interceptors. Probably also an expansion of the Ground-Based Missile Defense system, more silos, more sites, and an intensive upgrade and reliability program for the kill vehicle.
I have a feeling that part of it already exists.

If they did what I suggested a couple of decades ago, then it is already pretty robust against all the long range stuff.
Black Eye
Oh of course, this is just the disclosure and presentation of the idea to the public now that it's been in development for many years.
Blue doesn't burn on the lasers. Is that why the UN helmets are blue?
Walk your elevation down, a click or 2. They'll get hot.

I always thought it was to make for an easier target.

An Iron Dome should also help keep all those damned Chynah barroons, Jersey drones and alien UFOs out ;)

Who gets the contract? I wanna do some insider trading 😇

I hope they paint it blue.

I tend to lean toward a "Kevlar Dome" of capable vets protecting soft targets.

So Israel got the Iron Dome before America? Their must be some really important people there, don't you think?

Iron dome could be HAARP.
Nonsense.
