Made sense right after WWII when Britain still had a Navy the same size as ours. Belgium and Netherlands were included for logistical reasons, because they had the best ports for invading Europe. France had a big population at the time, about 5% of the world. Denmark(With Norway) provides chokepoints in the Baltic sea and Greenland in the GIUK gap. The other parts of the GIUK gap are UK and Iceland. Britain has Gibraltar choking the Mediterranean. Canada gave us a buffer to put radar stations for Soviet Bombers coming over the North Pole.
I don't know why Portugal and Italy were Included, but they were. The rest of the countries were added later.
I think Americans have a slightly distorted view on NATO. A lot of Europeans do not want NATO either. It has served its purpose after World War 2, defending against communism. But now the same communism is coming from the American Empire. The Germans always had a good relationship with Russia. There was trade and cultural exchange, but the US would no longer allow it, because it made Germany an industrial superpower.
The US has a lot of undue influence in Europe. For instance, mere hours after Donald Trump was elected, the German government fell, claiming the German government could no longer work... Why? Do the Germans get their instructions from the US? Can the German government not operate independently for its own people?
There are 84,000 US troops in Europe. Why? To defend from something? What then? Or is the purpose to use Europe as part of the US Empire to wage wars in the Middle East? Europe is basically occupied by the US.
By the way, the idea that the US would spend a single dollar less on "defense" if it were to disband NATO is a typical fantasy of isolationists. The US military-industrial complex is long been a self-propelled thing. It's exists for its own purpose and conflicts arise because they are needed to sustain it. It is sustained because conflicts require its existence.
We do understand this….that is why we need to get out of it. Trump understands this. The reason for the US to be in everyone’s business…is our past governments have all been corrupt! Trump is trying to change it, for all the countries.
I think at the least a major restructuring is in order. Keep some in, throw some out, and no benefits if they don't do and pay what they agree to do and pay. Kind of like Trump ditching NAFTA for the USMCA.
The USA should send Zelensky a bill of $500 billion for all the aid the USA has by now sent and stop doing anything for Ukraine. Fuck Nazi Zelensky for mass killing his own people.
The USA dollars enjoys the luxury of being the Global Reserve Currency. In order for this to materialize, you have to rule with an iron fist in some parts of the World. This cost is not only about NATO.
If the US left NATO there would BE no NATO. Which would be a massive win for the world.
Excellent. Lets do it then.
Russia can't even take Ukraine with old US equipment. WTF has NATO been doing with the equivalent of $10 trillion over the last 15 years?
Free health care, nice infrastructure, "pizza parties", getting richer with our cash, stuff like that I'd suppose.
Why are we in NATO anyway? Those countries all together couldn't defend us against an enemy. It seems like a bad deal to me.

Time to cut the apron strings.

Does the US get credit for the Billions sent to Ukraine?

No, because Ukraine is not a NATO member😂
The USA would save money, but the DS would lose money. So they will fight against any change.
Normalized by population size:

Exactly, they're freeriding parasites.
It is not only the money. Allowing 'foreign leaders' to command US. Troops, is a direct conflict with the US. Constitution.
u/#Correct
Thomas Jefferson warned us about 'foreign entanglements', and this one is about as big as one gets.
Canada should leave NATO also
I'd like to see what it was in 2015 before Trump raised a stink about it.
NATO is a money grab. That's all.
NATO made sense in the Soviet days, when the communist Russians were actively trying to conquer the world for Karl Marx. But it's 2025, now.
