The firearm was transferred to the tactical team office following the turn-in event, the Glock disappeared in a room full of police officers. In the subsequent investigation, it was discovered that a tag identifying the Glock had been hidden on a different firearm. The tag that should have accompanied the Glock was later found in the trash, evidence of a purposeful theft and cover-up to make it more difficult to track the firearm or its recovery. Further adding to the drama, the officer that was listed on those inventory records was later shot and killed by a fellow tactical team officer in what the police department labeled a friendly fire accident during a police pursuit
This paragraph is really the most telling thing in the article. And points to clear Corruption at Best. At Worst the Department was infiltrated by one or more organized crime outfits.
If I had to guess the Officer on the paperwork got iced to cover the tracks of the corrupt ones. As frankly it’s Chicago. The only people going to be in Tactical Gear on the Streets are PD. Which makes the ‘Friendly Fire’ story dubious at best.
Though I’d also launch a review of the Weapons still in storage. As I’m willing to bet they’ve been shoving the gun buyback stuff into a room or something until the city gets around to dealing with it. Meaning more could end up on the street.
Yeah it sounded to me like dirty cops making money on the side, who murdered a different officer that wouldn't join in on the grift.
I'd have to see the footage of the shooting though in order to determine how plausible that is.. if it even exists
It's a full circle scam for a gang: receive a gun that's guaranteed to not have a registration trail, and sell it back during the next buyback program for gov't cash, while picking up a new one or getting the same one again.
I do wonder if they have the foresight to perform ballistics testing on these guns to determine if they have been involved with a previous homicide. (With this locale I seriously doubt it, but maybe)
I doubt any of them do ... These programs have always seemed pretty sketchy to me. Good place to get rid of long-gone Gramps's rusty Sears 0.22 rifle, though.
My wife's cousin works for a company that used to do gun disposal from buybacks. They stopped doing it a few years ago when they found out the people they paid to destroy the firearms were just selling them as bulk scrap metal without destroying the guns first.
LISTEN TO THIS: A former Chicago gang member says HIGH CRIME BLACK COMMUNITIES get their guns FOR FREE - He's witnessed crates of guns and ammunition being 'DROPPED OFF' by 'government people' in the black communities to spur shootings and crimes. What could be their agenda here, hmmm?

Buyback/sell back seems to be a thing now i guess. Hope she wins. Hope she personally sues the mayor and police chief.
Take the guns from law abiding citizens and give them to criminals. Great plan.

Weird how cartels buy so much scrap metal.

I heard another one back in the "Summer of Love" say the same thing.
Chicago is demoKKKrat country, and demoKKKrats are still mad at their slaves for leaving the plantations.
Sue the gun.
Your right, the guns are shooting people, something must be done & soon.
