The other party said the shooter jumped with the rifle wrapped in a dark towel (which he may have used to lay on or as a rifle rest.). He had it in/under his hand when he hung and the hit the butt on the ground which could have caused the apparent damage to the scope mount...

My biggest concern was that they were willing to let innocent people die just to prove a link between the mosque, Hamas and suicide bombers. He got deplatformed shortly after.

Take the perp himself. Shooter was 22 y.o. Even if he got away clean, his life still would have been over. He'd spend the rest of his life being hunted down.
Now that he did get busted, at best he can look forward to is the next 50 years in prison.
