We still do it in rural Ireland. My neighbours have our front door keys and vis versa. It’s called high trust homogeneous societies.

When I grew up, we left our doors open; except when we went on vacation.
Yup, growing up we left our doors unlocked. I'm not sure we even had keys for the outside doors.
I live in a nice neighborhood and in a safe community NE of Houston, Tx... and we keep the front and back doors locked and all windows locked whether at home or away. Alarm system is active every night and any time we're away.
It's smarter to keep it that way. Nobody is fearful and everyone here at the house knows how to shoot, some having better skill and patience than others. Either way, the door locking is to keep honest people honest... and anyone who breaks in will have a very bad day.
Well, 15 years ago (when the guy with camera likely lived in Libia or Syria) - people in the IK were leaving their front door open too.
