In 2007, my mother was dying of cancer and our family were making frequent trips to the hospital. Even then there were posters on the walls preparing the public for the inevitability of a pandemic. It was in the works for a long time before they trotted it out.

This movie was made to conceal its director Stanley Kubrick's real objective, which was to develop new special effects in filmmaking that would be used to help fake the moon landings.

The entire extended sequence where one man is taxied up to the international space station was included to fool the public into thinking that going to the moon would practically be a mundane event in the near future.
