There is something about ALPHA leadership that encourages the bear in every good man and strikes fear in the betas. This happened in my years in the Coast Guard. A good unit always had a good strong captain at the helm, a poor unit commanded by a milquetoast jerk tended toward rebellion and requests for transfer. The worst I suffered was under a LT-jg at a LORAN-C station in Alaska, an isolated one year assignment with no transfer possible.
