I think the plan was for the DS to make the narrative that "this girl died because Trump."... but then the "Trump caused riot" narrative completely apart. That gave Trump the opportunity to take the story and turn it around on the DS. "Who Shot Ashli Babbitt" is another brilliant move by Trump.
He knows it's a hoax. But by claiming that he spoke to the family and using that to launch an investigation, he takes control of the narrative and traps the DS in their lie.
Imagine Chuck Schumer on a podium saying something like, "Trump did not speak to the family. We did. And Ashli's family told us to call off the investigation." See what's going on?
