Personally I think addictions are partly habitual in nature. A smoker for example; wake up smoke, eat breakfast smoke, leave for work smoke while driving, work 2 hrs smoke, lunch smoke, and etc etc. Do this same routine for 20 years, now just stop one day. You literally wires your brain to "needing" those smokes are specific times during the day.
