I've been to many of the food processing plants in California's Central Valley. Some have hand scanners that verify the migrant seasonal worker they hired is actually the same one that returns the next day / season. They rely HEAVILY on the migrant workers both in the fields and the plants.
It was be a devastating rug-pull to food production if we don't slowly back fill those positions or grant them green card status.
Things are making more sense as all this is exposed.
Years ago, my company hired a really cheap freight forwarder to move a 2,000 lb piece of equipment that I had to ship from New England down to N. Carolina.
Communication directly with the trucker was non-existent, as my instructions were very clear as to how I would need to meet him and let him into our secured lot.
The guy showed up an hour early as I remember seeing a random freight truck parked across the street, but he never called me to connect and I didn't know if he was there for some other business.
I call the Freight office and they tell me the trucker left because he couldn't get in the lot. They wanted to charge me for not getting him access. I told them he never called. They quickly changed their story to say that he only left to get more gas. 🙄
Now I'm on the look-out and as soon as the dolt pulls up, I run out to meet him. From up in his cab, with broken English he says he doesn't know where to go (It was in the instructions). I let him in and to my shock, this tall white guy hops down from his cab in flip-flops, swim trunks and a yellow wife beater tank-top with stains.
He opens the back and he only has a MANUAL pallet jack to manhandle an ornery 2,000 lb piece of machinery. Now I'm worried that this guy is going to get hurt trying to haul this in flip flops. He reassures me that it's no problem, but shortly thereafter manages to crash into the door frame and damage the trim.
While riding the elevator he tells me he's from Serbia.
This guy shoved the equipment onto the hydraulic lift gate and as he starts raising the platform, the load shifts and the manual pallet jack is starting to roll towards me. He grabs the handle to change the direction and I lunge towards it to keep it away from the edge (Not smart on my part I know 😕 but I was desperate to be done with this guy and job).
Amazingly he knew that he had to lower the equipment to prevent it from rolling before he tried to lift the platform any higher.
Somehow the equipment was delivered safely to NC. 🥵
