I'm surprised nobody has commented that the other guy's side of the story is missing. Maybe his anger wasn't provoked by the difference of opinion, but rather the interruptions, or something else. Maybe OP was shouting and using profanity or something else. Maybe there's a history preceding this particular day that affected what happened. Sure doesn't sound like anything happened that justified pounding on the OP. A while back, I asked in a discussion somewhere if different concoctions are being used for different countries and demographics. One response I got was this:
