The Russians used to do this also, at least when I was in back in the early '70s. They would come alongside and sometimes scrape our destroyer. A group of us would muster on the fantail with large round rubber fenders and when the Russians came close we would drop them over the lifelines to protect the side of our ship. The Russians were a lot worse than what I see above.
