I saw that yesterday. The Ukrainian document which showed Rustam Akhiev was in the Ukraininan army, that lists him as a Chechen (that is a Chechen style name he has AFAIK too) I got that because I can read basic cyrillic.
Chechens fought in Ukaine on both sides. Islamist Chechens fight for the Ukies, the patriot (may be Muslim) Chechens fight for the Russian seperatists.
The Chechen war was a bit like Syria in that the islamist terrorists were supported by the west.
There were plenty of Chechen islamists fighting for ISIS in Syria too.
