Without the distraction suddenly having no real friends, romantic partners, physical strength, mental fortitude or skills whilst maintaining a series of personality disorders comes into sharp relief for them. The media appeal to their audience's narcissism and their desire to be considered hip and elite. They know their audience tunes in to the late night shows to get their download of what they're expected to do and think, in order to be accepted.
This is one of the most insightful comments I've read in a while that goes beyond reiterating the same truths we've all come to know.
We always talk about how the media is fake, the viewers are sheep, the social networks are liberal echochambers, & the people willingly participating are either evil or stupid. But few point out how their toxic mentality & behavior is fueled not only by simple ignorance nor only self-serving choices, but also by something much deeper & much more destructive... Mental disorder.
A lot of these people can never be saved because the issues causing these problems are engrained in their brain. It doesn't matter if you show them truth, cut off the toxic feedback loop, or rebuild the entire system; they will just latch onto another that feeds into their critical personality flaw.
Perhaps some will see the light with the help of therapy, but narcissists are notoriously resistant to seeing their narcissism as their own flaw in need of remedy.
