normal web tracking : setup by webmaster / site owner. they only know what you did on THEIR web site. they only know stuff like what is your IP address, general location, pages you visited. they do not know who you are or anything about you.
facebook web tracking : they know who you are. they track you across MANY different web sites. you can visit 10 different sites owned by 10 different people and facebook can track it all.
Firefox has an addon called "Facebook container" which blocks this
I think Facebook is worse. Google seems to be more transparent but also has many more tentacles (for example, browser, search, phones, cloud internet, etc). At least they failed at creating a social network. Because Google owns a bigger platform, they can aggregate much more data, but they are fairly open about how they aggregate (or allow you to selectively decouple). Facebook on the other hand leverage the social graph more, and the interpersonal relationships are inherently not privacy preserving.
At work like 5-6 years ago I was talking with one guy and we mentioned how we had each other reccomended as friends but couldn't figure out how on earth we were connected. Neither of us had out place of employment listed. We're of two different generations. Live like an hour from each other. Have no mutual friends. And this guy was a Boomer who pretty much never even used it except to look at his kid's page.
I ended up figuring it out - we both had the Facebook app installed on our phone and we both had each other's phone numbers. So it was taking all of the numbers off our phone and cross referencing them to Facebook accounts. I never gave the app any sort of permission to do that and when I looked further into the settings of the app there was no way you could turn this 'feature' off.
I sent a message to Facebook about this egregious breech of privacy but never got even a form letter response back from them.
Yeah facebook recomended a friend a didnt recognize until i realized it was a kid i knew in elementary school that i havent talked to in ten years; apparently i had his phone number on my shitty flip phone in 2010
I’ve been saying this since I joined TDW long ago, get off FB! I beg you!!! I can’t stress it enough. I use this analogy when I talk to people offline. If someone came to your door with a clipboard and asked you for your name, address, phone, place of employment, marital status, religious preference, political party, a list of all your friends and family, a list of of all your coworkers, all your photos, where you go out to eat, where you shop, where you vacation, what kind of pets, what you like to watch on tv and movies, and so on.... and they’re also going to monitor most other websites you use and read all your private messages- would you willingly give it to them? Hand it over. For free. But they’ll make money off of it because you’re the product. You’ll really get nothing out of it except eventually an addiction and probably depression in the long run. And no privacy.
I left Facebook, Google search engine, Twitter, etc and when I used DuckDuckGo for the first time it gave me a pop up message that those companies were trying to track me and DDG stopped it. Hell yeah, get off these platforms people! They’re selling your private info and that’s how they get rich
How about tracking cookies, flashcookies, the likes? Any website has a host of all kinds of legal interest parties that very much like to track anyone visitor.
Why? to serve you adverts.
In the movie Minority Report, there is a scene where John is walking through the mall. And all advertising panes are shouting out his name. The beer he likes, how long he's been a member of a certain club, fragrances, the lot of it. All in the name of business opportunity.
And this is the stuff that gives me hope that the entire Supreme Court isn't run by the Deep State. I truly believe the SC can't take any voter fraud cases because they know something we don't. I'm pretty sure if something goes through military court it can't be tried in civil court. (Correct me if I'm wrong)
So this is my hope. We know that the military is the only way. If the Deep State owned the SC, then why are we getting so many decisions in our favor? Especially ones that uphold religious freedom.
I wonder if they're also tracking people across private local area and wide area networks as well. If that is also the case, they are then in true violation of the Wiretap Act. That would be a serious security risk then for all businesses that operate a local area or wide area private network.
The Supreme Court on Monday rejected an appeal from Facebook that requested the court intervene in a $15 billion class-action lawsuit alleging the firm illegally tracked the online activities of its users when they are not on the platform, thereby violating the federal Wiretap Act law.
“Facebook’s user profiles would allegedly reveal an individual’s likes, dislikes, interests, and habits over a significant amount of time, without affording users a meaningful opportunity to control or prevent the unauthorized exploration of their private lives,” the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said in a ruling (pdf) last year, saying that Facebook users suffered a clear invasion of privacy.
The “Plaintiffs have sufficiently alleged a clear invasion of the historically recognized right to privacy,” the court ruled at the time. “Therefore, Plaintiffs have standing to pursue their privacy claims under the Wiretap Act, [the Stored Communications Act], and [the Children’s Internet Protection Act], as well as their claims for breach of contract and breach of the implied covenant of good faith and fair dealing.”
On Monday, the Supreme Court denied Facebook’s appeal, meaning the suit can go forward.
The lawsuit alleged that the Menlo Park, California-based tech giant had secretly tracked users’ visits to websites that use Facebook’s features such as the “like” or “share” buttons, even if the users did not click on either of the two buttons.
The litigation also accuses the company of violating the privacy rights of its users under California law, but Facebook’s appeal to the Supreme Court involved only the Wiretap Act. The 1968 law has also been invoked in lawsuits against Google and Microsoft.
Four individuals filed the proposed lawsuit in California federal court seeking $15 billion in damages for Facebook’s actions between April 2010 and September 2011. The company stopped its nonconsensual tracking after it was exposed by a researcher in 2011, court papers said. They further argued that Facebook unjustly collected the data and sold it to advertisers for a profit.
Facebook, in response, said it maintained privacy standards and should not be penalized for communications that users partake in, saying that the data was collected to show users better content and more targeted ads on its platform. It has further said the data was not collected in an unfair manner.
“Facebook was not an uninvited interloper to a communication between two separate parties; it was a direct participant,” the company said in a legal filing.
Facebook now discloses that it collects data when people visit websites with the firm’s plug-ins. It reached a settlement over its practices with the Federal Trade Commission about a decade ago.
Don't get excited. The trashy judges are just pushing paper around until it is massive bribery day. When it gets closer the bribes will be larger. Have you not learned anything:)
A $15 billion class action lawsuit would be a big hit to them. Add to that what Europe and other places around the world want to do, and they can be destroyed.
The 15B will put a small dent in it. But what will really hurt them is once they win the lawsuit people will look into and
See the terrible things Facebook has been doing stock price will drop
The fundamental problem is that online advertisement (or digital products) work with different economics. Once you produce a product, you can copy it infinite times with minimal marginal costs.
Facebook then auctions the something (where the product is you) to the highest bidder in a blind dutch auction. Google does the same thing. They then revenue share with content creators to hook people (ways to buy acquire scarce attention) on platforms like youtube or instagram, while optimizing the advertising levels so people click.
I don't think $15 billion will hurt them much. Facebook IS the internet in many countries.
Well what about if you have a personal page & a "public page"? I have noticed that on my public page where I have over 15,000 followers that they only share posts to very small fraction of followers, and worse if I post a video or share from someone else's page. I know they want me to pay to boost but that's not ever happening. The page isn't a business page and I don't get anything out of it except the happiness it brings to others. So it kinda pisses me off they don't share to more followers being it's not even a business page, I make absolutely no money from it. I mostly stay on FB because of that public page, because people following asked me not to close it, for some that have issues with depression it's something that brings them a smile for moment or a day.
If I had the money I'd sure like to sue them too! I'm forever getting crap in my newsfeed of things I look up online. One time I messaged a friend on messenger about something, next thing I know I get an add in my newsfeed. So they watch what you send in messenger also. I'm surprised they haven't shut me down yet from the stuff I send to friends or family in messenger, lol.
Well I had to look up how to do it first, lol! Actually, I made the mistake a lot of people made, taking pics of my kids and memorializing them. Firsts like passing the driver test, proms, etc. So I wanted to keep all those photos.
SHORT FB STOCK
Interesting that SCOTUS did that, and also that the case against FB is from the formerly-leftist 9th Circuit.
