Slippery slope. Besides, if a cop shoots my dog will the cop be charged as if they killed a person?

The ATF strongly objects.

It's "technically" a slippery slope, but if your dog isn't also a Police K9 then, sorry, not the same thing.

So if a K9’s life is more valuable solely because it is an officer then by that reasoning a human police officer’s life is more valuable than a civilian?

I don’t think so.

You are correct and people aren’t thinking clearly about this situation.

No, I never said that. But if a CRIMINAL chooses to end the life of a K9 in the line of duty all bets are off. See, pieces of shit who will never be redeemed shouldn’t get a second chance at breathing air. An eye for an eye, even if the comparison in this example is that of a K9. It’s not somebody’s pet, it’s a dog that does a job, a service to the community.

All men are created equal until one decides to fuck up. Involuntary vs. voluntary, if you kill someone in the act of committing a crime, you should die, plain and simple.

“It’s not somebody’s pet, it’s a dog that does a job, a service to the community.“ My pet does a service to my family and me. If a criminal kills a dog, whether the dog is an agent of the state or not, the punishment should be the same. Just like if a person kills another, regardless of the victim’s employ, race or gender pronouns, the punishment should be the same.

Okay, I'm down, we had a neighbor who's dog was poisoned - ate a piece of steak that the vet had removed from it's stomach. Vet said it was laced with something - the dog only ever at kibble dog food. The person who did it was never found but the whole neighborhood has it's suspicions on who the person was, does that mean we should kick in his door and force him to eat poised meat? Slippery slope.

We had another neighbor who's Rottweiler got out of their yard and attacked another dog being walked by a couple. The dog didn't survive. Days later the police came out - at the request of the veterinarian and informed the owners of the Rottweiler that their dog had to be put down. Eye for an eye, More like, their Rottweiler was a danger to society so it had to be removed. Thank God.

Point being, be prepared (as all pet owners should) if your dog ever attacks another person or animal, criminal or innocent person you can be held liable. Or as in most cases your animal can be put down if a person even - ironically - a criminal decided to press charges.

We added on to our house and the insurance inspector came out to take pictures of the addition and she noticed we had four German Shepherd dogs in our backyard, she asked if they were ours and a week later we got our revised insurance policy that had an additional line item on the liability side indicating the four Shepherds along with a nice premium increase.

I think it was misunderstood, I'm all for you kill, you get killed. I think we're arguing the same point.

I understand there are myriad situations that can occur and each deserve individual assessment. My point in respect to the original post is that, although I can understand the sentiment of the poster, determining the value of one life in respect to another life based on the parameters in the post is dangerous. Do law enforcement officers deserve respect and appreciation? Absolutely. Should their life be elevated over others through the use of legal deterrents which are not afforded all people? In my eyes no.

That’s a form of elitism isn’t it? A K9 is no more entitled to life because it works with and protects a public employee than my dog that works with and protects me and my family. Is a police officer’s life more valuable than mine simply because of their position?

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 7 ▼
– Hodar 7 points 5 years ago +7 / -0

Yes. A policeman places his life on the line every single day.
If the penalty for murder of a cop is automatic Death Sentence, some idiots will stop and think before reacting

You nor I don’t place our lives in danger several times a day, keeping society safe. We just enjoy the benefits of society

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 7 ▼
– Rawhyde 7 points 5 years ago +7 / -0

If that deterrent is good enough for a police officer then why not for me or anyone else? There are occupations where people are at the same level of risk from injury or death at the hands of criminal elements as a police officer. You are assigning more value to a life simply because it is an agent of the state. That is wrong and a dangerous direction. Politicians receive constant death threats and are agents of the state. Do they deserve such distinction?

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 3 ▼

Federal Agents who investigate fraud are afforded legal protection. FBI and Secret Service are afforded legal protection Federal Marshals are afforded legal protections

When you place your life at risk to protect others; there are penalties for being attacked

You are welcome to join. And yea, if someone attacks you, you are also legally protected. If someone kills you, your murderer will be charged, and possibly face a death sentence as well

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 4 ▼
– Rawhyde 4 points 5 years ago +4 / -0

It’s a legal deterrent, not protection. It makes state agents more worthy in the eyes of the law than ‘lesser’ civilians. Don’t kill the armed and trained agent because we value them more but kill the (often) unarmed and untrained civilian instead.

How many drunk drivers are you forced to deal with a day? How many domestic violence situations do you deal with daily? How many armed robberies do you run to?

Again, you are welcome to apply.

Or you can do drug interdiction, or forensic work on fraud worth millions or billions. Border Patrol, or track down escaped Felons

Are there people worth more than the man on the street? Yup

  1. Get another job, or---
  2. Quit protecting fellow officers who are assholes and criminals.
  3. Get out of those stupid unions. The job will have enough demand for people to pay highly.
  4. Quit voting for Marxists.
  5. Refuse to enforce (illegal) anti-Second Amendment laws.
  6. Refuse to engage in traffic quotas.
  7. Quit thinking you are better than everyone else.

Start valuing humans less and you end up in a dark place.

In a separate response I insinuated that they should be held in higher value than property but less than humans. Personally think we should value and be good stewards of all life entrusted to us.

In a “in the heat of the moment” I think any means up to deadly are warranted. Personally though, as much as I love dogs and other critters, I do not think a dogs life = a human in any exchange. If we’re to go with courtroom punishments as insinuated by the meme, hard fucking no to the premise.

One thing to consider is the amount of money, time, and effort it takes to find the right dog and train him. You don't replace a police dog at the drop of a hat.

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 7 ▼
– ColludingWithAmerica 7 points 5 years ago +7 / -0

Neither do you replace a human in any contrived scenario.

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 4 ▼
– LoneWulf 4 points 5 years ago +4 / -0

I fully agree that a human life is worth more than a dog. That being said, there should be a penalty for a perpetrator who intentionally kills a police dog. They are expensive to train and maintain and perform a vital function.

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 4 ▼
– LoneWulf 4 points 5 years ago +4 / -0

How much does a police dog cost:

A dog is possibly the most important purchase for a K-9 unit.

A single-purpose dog can cost $2,500-$4,000, without training, or very little.

If you purchase a dog from a private vendor, they can be more expensive.

A dog trained for dual purpose-for both patrol and narcotics, for example-can cost $8,000-$10,000.

https://thedogvisitor.com/how-much-does-it-cost-to-train-a-police-dog

On top of that is the cost to feed and care for the dog -- quite an investment for a police force.

I agree, but the death penalty and life in jail are off the table for me personally. Maybe a slightly harsher penalty than property destruction than can’t be served concurrently.

Replacement costs minimally. What is the penalty for destroying a police cruiser? It costs more than a dog, but I could see that

Also, no. Given that officers near me kill dogs of criminals and innocents alike with impunity, I would say this is a punishment too far. Dogs aren't people. They shouldn't even be on airplanes and no one needs a "comfort animal."

Think about it, all they have to do is sic dogs on you and provoke you into defending yourself. Suddenly it's "OFFICER DOWN!"

You want to give lairs like David Chipman that kind of power? Because this is exactly what they will do.
