Where are the birds?
posted 4 years ago by Jabber1 4 years ago by Jabber1 +29 / -0

May just be local gossip on the local NextDoor app but people are observing the sudden disappearance of birds and also squirrels here in my Ohio community. We noticed oddly that as of 2 weeks ago no birds are visiting our feeder. Can others vouch for this? Odd? If real, what does it mean?

They probably all move to Florida or Texas.

I remember last year hearing that the implementation of 5G towers was having an impact on birds.

It's apparently a known issue that wifi towers have been destructive to the bee population. So it wouldn't surprise me if other, newer, technology is having a similar impact on other wildlife.

Certainly plausible. Just odd that prior to a couple or three weeks ago they were ubiquitous, now just not around or active

yes. birds were so thick in June-July. house sparrows building nests under the eves could not be discouraged. refilling a large feeder once a day.

almost overnight, there's very few. of anything. even bugs.

Search 'Mass Bird Death'. Has lots of interesting results.

Also this for all mass die offs:

https://www.end-times-prophecy.org/animal-deaths-birds-fish-end-times.html

They did others previous years too.

A pleasure fren, I had a little look into this a while ago when we had a local bird die off. Also a load of homing pigeons went astray which was very unusual (solar storm claimed). Happy hunting!

In the Florida Panhandle, we have no birds at our seed feeder the past week or two. We have been having a ton of hummingbirds, though.

South Florida checking in.

I got all the birds here. What kind you want? I've got Blue Jays, Cardinals, ducks, geese, woodpeckers, mockingbirds, green parrots...

But, there is the fact that I live two miles from the everglades.

Here in rural Oregon the squirrels are out in force, playing chicken with vehicles on the backroads and mostly losing. I see them often on the property, zipping around to collect nuts during the day and watching me from trees at night when I'm walking our dog (well, I see their eyes shining in the light from my flashlight, anyway. It's really cute).

Birds have seemed scarce here to me for the last decade or so, honestly. Grew up in the midwest long ago when flocks of birds were sometimes breath-taking. Not so much here.

Another group that seems to be thinning here: insects. I don't mind that one but it doesn't sound good long-term.

No where near you in New Brunswick, Canada, we have no shortage of birds or squirrels.

Seriously though, could be a hawk / predator bird has moved in, or has been frequenting your area lately. We've got lots of predator birds here and when the hawks and merlins are around, the little birdies bug out. I've seen it quiet for a couple days.
The big grey squirrels don't seem to mind, but the little red ones buzz off as well.

You didn't mention what birds you regularly get. If we're talking chickadees / sparrows a couple weeks is definitely odd. You may be getting just seasonal birds to your feeders. We notice the grackles and the nuthatches take off for south before the goldfinches and sparrows do.

I'm a fairly serious birder, pretty serious bird photographer and I take part in the yearly bird count for Canada.

I live out in the country in SW Missouri. It seemed like I had fewer summer songbirds this year than previous years, and I saw absolutely no scissor-tailed flycatchers. On the other hand, I had lots of barn swallows, and the killdeer and buzzards have seemed to be the usual amount. I've lived in this home for nearly 20 years, so I'm aware of the typical patterns.

No where near as many here in Florida as normal for this time of year. As an avid Hummingbird feeder I have only seen one this entire year.

There are plenty here in eastern NC. We have cardinals, mockingbirds, blue jays, house wrens, sparrows, blackbirds, hummingbirds, egrets, blue herons, wild ducks, wild geese, mourning doves, flickers, woodpeckers, and more. We put out seed almost every day.

You might want to check your feeder and make sure the seed hasn't molded. If the birds see that, they will learn to avoid the feeder.
