The NEWS says the California port situation is caused by a driver shortage. Not so fast: It is in part caused by a California Truck Ban which says all trucks must be 2011 or newer and a law called AB 5 which prohibits Owner Operators. (media.communities.win)

I heard yesterday it's because:

A: To dock in a blue state you need to be vaccinated.

B: Blue state fines, taxes and regulations are impossible to deal with.

C: Truckers won't pick up shipments in blue states, also because of vaccination status rebellion.

Bonus round, and why this might be a good thing:

D: The more ships not distributing Chinese tat, the less money China is making.

Bo-bonus round, and why it might be a bad thing:

E: China may have put dirty bombs and shipping-container missile batteries on all the ships and we're completely surrounded. (This might be a reactionary hostage-taking measure to the US doing [D] and holding China's global economy hostage.)

F: China Joe is intentionally causing shortages in every blue state he can to put pressure on the US economy and make it more chaotic when the government collapses due to debt.

To add to that as I just saw something like this on telegram. The ships sitting off the Cali port are having to go through the Panama Canal and up to the Houston port after a month of waiting to unload. Same with NY ports, those ships are having to go to red state ports on the Easy Coast.

This is the type of information that should be stickied on this site.

Not half funny memes, not old covid shit from July, actual things that pertain to the constantly evolving situation.

That's actually insane. Owner operator is basically the end goal of every trucker. You learn as an employee and stack your chips. Then you invest in yourself and run lines in your own truck. My buddy saw his female cousin posting pictures of her checks when she finally was able to get there and it motivated him to leave his first trucker job to find a better paying one so he could get there quicker.

I agree. It's so insane it makes you wonder if they even bothered trying to make a justification for it. You might as well ban all small businesses then.

Well, there was never any question in my mind that this problem with shipping was being caused by the globalists. It is nice to know how they did it though.

Can we just revert California to a territory? That would solve 90% of the problems in the USA.

?? That would solve 0 problems and create hundreds.

We need to repatriate CA and they need to follow federal law.

As much as I like this idea, it's also a dangerous one. Can you imagine if the federal government told states they have to abide by federal laws for election laws? States' rights are important.

Sadly, California state is one of the few states that abuses this power to impact other states businesses.

I didn't say they needed to follow more laws than the rest of the country.

This is a good idea and all and probably true for California, but don't forget there's also other states that have the same problem.

My guess is that with the federal vaccine "mandate" going in, all the federal inspectors that okay cargo contents coming in are quitting. A guy I know who works for TSA at the port says they are overworked and people are quitting. And the backlog of cargo coming in is growing. I haven't asked how things were since the vaccine mandate, but would guess the shortage in inspectors is growing.

AB5 is such a joke. It was created specifically to target Uber Lyft etc. but they have the pockets to get exemptions but not owner operators. i can't wait for Arizona Bay.

I had a question before as to why a regular Joe couldn't grab a decent pickup truck and start grabbing shipments in smaller quantities. That answers my question succinctly.

New question: if we start throwing Chinese shipments into the ocean, would that help make room for the shipments we actually want?

permalink save report block reply
▲ 2 ▼
– blurryface 2 points 4 years ago +2 / -0

That's not possible because the semi trucks just take the whole container on a special trailer. A pickup would need to open and unpack them.

There are tens, maybe hundreds of thousands of containers stuck at those ports. Each one needs a truck.

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 2 ▼
– Bedminster 2 points 4 years ago +2 / -0

Truck are not the problem, it's the chassis that carry the containers. There's a massive shortage of them, More containers than chassis to carry them.

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 1 ▼
– inutterable 1 point 4 years ago +1 / -0

Yeah, a truck and trailer. I was thinking something along the lines of shortening the distance the semis needed to travel, flip to pickups, then continue. But the CA laws wouldn't let that fly either.

▲ 1 ▼
– inutterable 1 point 4 years ago +1 / -0

Or, maybe we can dedicate some different storage areas for storing the Chinese containers. That way we can make sure those fees stack up. We'll get to them eventually...

Many additional problems with that though.

--All shipping will have to go around thru either the Suez Canal or thru the Panama Canal.

-- Suez route effectively more than doubles the travel time/at sea port-to-port than it is now.

-- Suez route puts ship and crews at risk of pirates as they pass Somalia (yes it's still a thing), or crazy-ass Muslims looking to make a statement.

--Panama route limits ship size: the larger container ships simply do not fit.

-- BOTH canal options also add queue time: ships dont pass upon arrival. They are put into a Queuing system based on arrival time and must anchor awaiting their turn....providing nothing bumps their slot.

--BOTH canal options introduce an additional level of danger and training required of ship crews.

Just thought I'd throw this short-list out there since few see it.

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 1 ▼
– MordenGeist 1 point 4 years ago +1 / -0

Some may, perhaps, but the vast majority is not. Ports in Long Beach, for example, are stacked high and filled with containers waiting for delivery. Ships in anchor still waiting to be unloaded.

This problem was self-created by California by 2 things, as the OP posted: 1) Cali passed a Bill that outlaws any truck older than 2011, and 2) passed another Bill that excludes Owner/Operator truckers which make up the majority of trucking out there. Ergo, truckers are either in violation because of rigs or because they arent part of a company/union. THAT is the main reason things are backing up in Cali ports. There are way more containers waiting to go than there are trucks/drivers to get them...so they sit.

https://www.aqmd.gov/docs/default-source/ab-617-ab-134/steering-committees/wilmington/handouts-may9-2019.pdf?sfvrsn=8

Vehicles that aren't newer than 2010 need to get a report done on emission and various standards to pass. Looks like there's other filter requirements.

But New Orleans has an absolute bitch for a Mayor. Never would let it happen. Landreiu started the teardown of statues under the cover of night and Cantrell is shutting down the cities tourism. Highly doubt she'd be on board with easing any bottlenecking. John Bel Edwards is also a D.
