The story sounds fishy. NCMEC (founded by Hillary Clinton and pedo artist Jeff Boors among others) were notified of a single image being uploaded to dropbox. Unless it was a sting or they were already monitoring this guy then how were there notified? And why NCMEC? They aren’t law enforcement

I'm guessing this is 1/6 related. The poor guy may have showed some partial honesty during internal investigations. They have to shut down that type of behavior, regardless of actual guilt on CP charges.

You can calculate a unique file hash for any file. For example, on a windows PC, in a command prompt do
powershell -c get-filehash yourfile.txt
and you will receive a string, something like

Same concept applies to images and videos, if they are in an unaltered state, you can easily see if a file is known regardless of name/extension.
Certain agencies and organizations in both the public and private sector will actively maintain hash lists of known files. It is plausible that a file with a known hash was observed (hosts might not have access/look at your content but they will often log hashes). So it is not impossible that they observed a known hash and reported it.
This does not exclude the possibility that a hash was planted, but there is a methodology to this.

For example, the Sergeant at Arms of the Canadian House of Commons defended the HOC with deadly force using a ceremonial pistol back in 2014 from a gunman. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/sergeant-at-arms-hailed-as-hero-in-ottawa-shooting/ Prior to being in that position, he served honorably with the Royal Mounties for several decades. You don't place non-capable and swampy people in that position because of shifty deals.
