I looked into this incident. Apparently that shelter where the "protestors demanded hot meals" is in a really filthy area full of homelessness and drug addicts. There's also like 150 cameras with a massive police presence at all times.
The manager at the shelter output this story because of a "log report" from Saturday night, the first night of protests.
The city went all in with "we cannot tolerate this" but no video footage of the incident.
Gees, how many homeless are out there in those temps? I'd have thought the polite, fair and humanitarian Canadian govt would never allow such a thing to befall their countrymen. (Yes, I used an assumed gender term to represent a more inclusive mix of people).

Don’t know why you are downvoted. Historically most homeless people arent homeless long because they do what needs to be done to get out of that situation. Most of the chronically homeless are exactly as you describe - either unable or unwilling to do what needs to be done. And I have sympathy for the ones that are unable (mentally ill, vets).
Dude, I know homeless people that are homeless because they trade their subsidized housing for drugs. I agree we could eliminate a lot of homelessness by helping the less fortunate, but there is a faction of the homeless that absolutely will remain that way unless the Lord does a miracle in their hearts and minds.
I am also in recovery. You can and should offer help to people. But they have to want it. Unfortunately you can’t make them want it. I always leave the door open, but I don’t chase them with what they don’t want. I encourage them though. BTW I’m basically a glorified, well-paid social worker and I do work with the homeless. I have seen miracles and it keeps me going. Even if you only are able to help 1 in 100 it’s totally worth it.
But I will say in my own personal experience, drying out isn’t enough. Even if I couldn’t have got drugs or alcohol, I was pretty miserable before which is why I started using. Gotta be willing to put the hard work in. If you aren’t, then people tend to find other destructive/noxious behavior to engage in.
So I’m definitely not callous. But I am realistic.
Mike Lindell comes to mind. He went from a nobody with drug problems to successful businessman to becoming one of the leaders of the modern patriot movement

SF is my home town. I’ve watched junkies and shitheads destroy every inch of that once beautiful city. I got no sympathy for these people.
