I was just telling a friend today why they were pushing electric cars. It's not because of "climate change", it's because electric cars are easier to restrict than fossil fuel vehicles.

He didn't quite believe me.

A high mpg car is cleaner than an electric car in coal burning China.

No it isn't, because regenerative braking.

A hybrid is roughly on par with a electric car... but has simultaneously all of the issues of electric cars, all of the issues of gasoline cars, and new issues created from combining the two

permalink parent save report block reply

That would depend on your driving pattern.

On highway miles it wouldn't matter.

Neither hybrids nor electric vehicles are advertised as contractors trucks. They are suburban and city cars. You are not driving 20k+ highway miles a year in any hybrid

Sorry but, an IGT is far more efficient than an internal combustion engine. Something like 70% vs 10-30%. A power-plant can exceed 70% when configured as a combine cycle with a steam generator.

As for the grid, there is minimal loss. That’s why you have step-down transformers at the point of use.

EXACTLY!!! I totally think that's why we aren't seeing many gas cars being produced - they are going to push up the price of gas - and then "magically" produce a bunch of EV's on lots so people will buy them. NO THANKS!!

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 27 ▼

While I agree that they want to be able to control cars, I tend to believe the bigger "reward" for these ingrates pushing EVs just to keep people off the roads in general. Our power grid cannot handle a sudden change from gasoline to electric. They know that ... and they couldn't care less. Control of vehicles is a bonus. Hell, they can control most gasoline powered vehicles right now for the most part.

What fucking drives me bonkers is that there are many ways a traditional gas engine can be improved ... if one could control valves w/o a cam, you'd open up a ridiculous number of ways to conserve fuel depending on driving conditions. The problem is that all auto manufacturers have basically stopped all research into improving gasoline engines. They've gone full retard with EVs ... mainly due to government regulation bullshit. Some smaller companies are making engines with this kind of technology, but it doesn't have a prayer of making it to market ... even if they could somehow bump up the numbers they produce, you still have oil companies that would be horrified seeing trucks and cars getting 60, 70, 80 MPG or more.

Moreover, these freaks obsessed with "greenhouse gasses" ... those emissions plummet when a catalytic converter warms up. If these fucking degenerates were truly concerned about the environment as well as freedom for people to drive, they'd be more into plug-in hybrids ... you could start the vehicle in electric mode, let the catalytic converter warm up, then switch to gasoline if you have to. If your commute is short, you can stay in electric mode. Most greenies hate PHEVs MORE than gas engines since the whiney little faggots aren't getting everything they want and realize that they're a pretty solid solution to this "problem".

I do like the idea of hybrids and PHEVs as long as they aren't able to be remotely stopped by authorities.

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 15 ▼
– Megadeth 15 points 3 years ago +15 / -0

They can remotely stop any newer vehicle regardless of it's engine.

One other thing that just occurred to me ... I could see these freaks doing something where they make it illegal to charge your EV at home ... if they ever feel the peons are getting too uppity, they'll shut down the charging stations.

▲ 9 ▼
– propertyofUniverse 9 points 3 years ago +9 / -0

Yes, and they can always say it's because the grid is unstable at that time. The perfect excuse to stop everyone in a region from charging or to empty their cars for the "greater good" of the grid.

And if whole country is converted to EV when not if a large electromagnetic event like solar storm or EMP nuke, all vehicles will become bricked. At least with some diesel vehicles there’s a chance those may still work. And reason we also have a strategic petroleum reserve. It’s be hard to have a electricity reserve.

I think that PHEVs are the way of the future IMO. They use both gas and electricity, and can get crazy high mpg numbers for full sized vehicles. Toyota has been developing the best hybrid technologies for a while now, and I think that PHEVs provide both high mpg and the convenience of plugging in for EV only. PHEVs still can drive off of gas, which provides freedom as well.

– basilpesto 2 points 3 years ago +2 / -0

I think it’s a smokescreen imo.

The current production numbers do not support the claim, AND, the Biden Assministration hates Tesla. The UAW owns Biden, and Biden has been going on a tear lately cheering up the traditional ICE makers.. Ford, GM, etc. Their plans for an all EV-only production roadmap is beyond 2030.

Tesla makes the most EVs per quarter, and yet has been attacked by both the SEC and constantly snubbed by the Xiden Assministraion — this does not add up, at all.

ICE cars are easy to restrict as well btw, so that’s not it.

Something else is afoot here.

Could it be shares in battery companies and lithium mining?

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 2 ▼
– basilpesto 2 points 3 years ago +2 / -0

The vast majority of batteries are produced outside the US.

The reason why Tesla’s can’t make cars fast enough is because their supplier, Panasonic, can’t make them fast enough.

I also doubt shares in these companies are big money making machines for the folks in Congress (e.g. Pelosi, Scott, etc). They much rather purchase Options in the larger stocks (GOOGL, APPL, etc)…

ICE cars too have lots of chips and electronics in them today, so precious metals are used.

Who knows fren. I’ll have to plug into the matrix again and see what else I can find out :)

If Elon Musk turns off all Russian Teslas due to political differences...

... NOBODY on Earth will buy a Tesla in the future. You would know that it can be shut down by the company for any reason they want. If you give to the wrong charity, or you support the wrong political party... they can shut your car down.

Sales will plummet to zero.

Most modern cars sold within the past 8-10 years have the ability to receive updates "over-the-air". This also allows these vehicles to be remotely hacked .

Popping out the fuses that allow satellite updates and communication with cell towers might be a quick solution.

Maybe a quick workaround for this is run a Bluetooth to FM transmitter and forego Mainstream Music all together?

I listen to my own music and x22 using my own data all the time using this method for almost a decade now. Actually be nice to own the airwaves so to speak in my vehicle instead of competing for an open frequency on the crowded FM radio dial.

Agree with you, but unfortunately there will be still a lot of people who will support the idea of shutting off all Tesla’s within Russian borders.

People are that stupid.

But yea, it will not be a good move. We’re seeing this ‘cancel’ wars happening in the crypto space as well.

TPMS might aid in tracking.

It is theoretically possible that any radio receiver have a kill switch. The signal could be sent over AM/FM/XM or the frequency used by the keyfob. The former should be fixable with an aftermarket radio.

On the bright side, the 3G and 2G sunsets will disable connectivity for many moderately new vehicles. But it would be possible to turn them back on or use a stingray for a special operation.
