Who would have thought that collectively we have been imprisoned by technology, not liberated as promised. The path to liberty includes simplification, the shredding off the dependency on tech, go low tech, buy from local small businesses, etc. When corporationism speaks, the opposite they say is the truth. Dumbphones REPLACING smartphones! We will be living in a better world, real relationships and truth will come back.
In some ways, but they also live in an extremely authoritarian world of their own. Very conformist, can be shunned for many reasons, independent thinking is frowned on etc.
Kinda like how having a better-paying job used to mean working less and being able to live a "better" life with more leisure time. But for the past few decades, it's turned inyo working harder, longer workdays and workweeks with fewer "real" hours/days off and having to deal with more headaches/beauracracy.
Right. And as phones become more expensive you're not buying them outright anylonger. They're defunct and you need a new one every few years anyway. This is a major step towards getting you use to 'You will own nothing'. You'll just being loaned it (or maybe one day required, for tracking and surveilance) by your govt, which we all see is running our lives through corporations in ways they could never pass a law to do.
Yep I have both and neither are constantly carried around with me like a smartphone was. Additionally, I have been more mindful even with the dumb phone with never having the ringer on and usually putting it in a drawer when I get home.
While Google Maps is certainly convenient to find places while out and about, I am happy to have a flip phone. I resisted getting a cell phone up until 2005. I know if I was to ever get a smartphone, it would be hard to go back. Even if my students make fun of me for having a flip phone, I am content with it. My wife recently upgraded to a smartphone this past year, but she still borrows my phone to call her mom because it's more comfortable. I only charge it once a week.
I fucking hate my smartphone (as I type this in from my smartphone). Back in 2008 they were a cool novelty, but nobody could’ve really predicted how much they’d take over our lives so completely.
If I could get a dumb phone with basic call/text/camera/gps functionality I’d be sold.
The ideal solution for me would be to keep my smart phone for those time I really need it but to have a simple and inexpensive flip phone with only voice and text operating on the same phone number. This would be very much like when I had an extension phone in different rooms in my home.
Saddly, because the dumb phones are just as bad as smart phones these days, you'll find you can be listened to as well as tracked just as easily as with a smart phone. If you want that not to be the case just dump phones altogether. Or if you have to do it, use dumb phones as cheap as they are and drop them regularly and never port a number.
I really like this trend. However. I have tied my phone to my business and now need it. I remember when the blackberrys were out and I hated them. I loved my brick. But. Once I was given a smart phone. My business productivity increased tenfold. Now I'm a slave to my mini screen! There must be a way to maybe own a brick and have a smart phone that stays in the car to do the research needed and pay, receive money.
I'm not sure that it can be removed, a surprising amount of software on samsung phones can only be 'deactivated'.
When I replaced my phone last, I was actually blown away by how many TOS's it takes before the phone will even turn 'on'. 3 TOS to use the keyboard, 2 more for voice functions, etc... if it was any more flagrant they would just say "you don't own this phone, you just pay to use it"

...the Amish I know are the most free and happy people who walk this earth....
In some ways, but they also live in an extremely authoritarian world of their own. Very conformist, can be shunned for many reasons, independent thinking is frowned on etc.
Independent thinking is only frowned upon if it goes against the Bible.
True, however from what I know the elders of the church are kind of in charge of Bible interpretation. Pretty strict in that.
If what you know about the Amish comes from Breaking Amish, I can understand why you think that.
Kek. No it doesn't come from Breaking Bad.
Kek, no, it doesn't come from Breaking Amish.

They cost more so that they can spy on us harder!
The whole thing is stupid, isn't it?
It's more a function of scarcity and the USD imploding in value
...it is a racket....
I'd like a dumb phone. I don't want a computer for a phone that I use mainly as a GPS, if at all.
Just got mine! It's a Boostmobile flip phone. I pay $8 a month and it does unlimited calls/texts.
My smartphone broke in January 2020 and I replaced it with a dumb phone, it’s been great.
So you just use a laptop or tablet instead?
I work from home and use a desktop PC. I do have a laptop that doubles as a tablet but rarely use it.
I have a cheap smartphone as well, but other than two factor authentication apps for work, I could easily get by with a dumb phone.
This is how the phones hook you, there are one or two essential features. I lost my good camera and now the phone is the only one.
If I didn't need the apps to log into work VPN, I'd totally go flip phone.

I miss having a flip phone with T9 capability. You could text and drive without looking at phone and it was faster too.
And they felt good hanging up on a bad conversation! Slapping that flip shut was uplifting
I miss that sound. Remember it like it was yesterday.

...doggy sighs....
...those were the days my friend....
I have an old smart phone I use as an alarm for work and it holds a charge for over 2 weeks on airplane mode.

I would have kept mine if they did not tell me that it's not supported. I don't like the smartphone.
Smartphones are great tools if used as such. No-one is forcing you to spend your days scrolling Instagram.
My phone is a toy compared to my desktop PC.
...the Galaxy Flip is pretty cool..
...3 G is nada....
It should still work until December if on TMobile.
Does anyone have a recommendation for a good dumbphone? Thanks.
Hear, HEAR!!!!
Right?! & again after every automatic "update"
...doggy winks....
Are those options still turned off?
