Keep in mind, I'm saying it's a good story that's talked about like it's great... like a 7/10 instead of a 9-10/10.
What it ultimately comes down to is that people talk about it as science fiction, where it's much better described as a fantasy story set in a futuristic civilization. The big one I mentioned already was that the interstellar civilization only survives because of spice, spice can only be obtained on Arakis, but they can't get to it without the spice, which itself doesn't hurt the plot, but it's small details that I hesitate to try and cite specifics because, as a fantasy, the 'rules' are generally more flexible.
Also, the way they are treated as a series, but aside from the first two the stories are really only connected in the sense that they are set in the same 'universe'. I should have stopped at the first book.
If you change "spice" to "oil" and then try to figure out who is being represented by the different political factions, it makes it a bit more interesting.
I guess some colleges still do their job. A few years when my daughter was a sophomore in college she said “I’m learning how to learn”. This made me happy. I think I had told her something to that effect in the past.
Smaller "less prestigious" colleges often still teach people how to learn. I just finished university a smaller place, I learned a lot about learning from certain excellent professors. It was easy to sniff out the rats.

In the 4th book Leto talks about the restrictions on movements in his empire, getting around involves walking and how that is a key component of the oppression and control that his Golden Path is providing. Leto seems to be saying that the 4000 years of his tyranny is essential to program freedom mindedness into humanity at a genetic level, so that the species never again is inclined to let itself stagnate under control.
Then I look around at the incredible efforts made to crush freedom of movement (lockdowns, the EV lie, public transport (which really is limiting movement to where the cabal allows) etc) and I see terrifying parallels with Leto's restrictions on movements and how it is a key part of Empire.
The sexual thralldom used by the Honored Matres is like the Covid hysteria, it is a powerful force for ruling while it lasts - but when the hysterical hold is broken it will rebound violently on those who used it.

I believe it is an allegory about the petrodollar and the "battles" over the control of oil prior to 1971-1972 creation of the petrodollar. I did not understand the "bloodline" stuff until exposed to the cabal family bloodline stuff.

This appears to be shown in 'Dune' by the Spice Guild that tightly controls the supply and only allows small amounts onto the market to keep the price high.
Dinosaurs being linked to oil appears to be cabal code used in the 19th century to disclose discoveries. Overlay all the reported "dinosaur bone" discoveries with oil wells from 1830-1900, and you might find something interesting. Note the Sinclair Oil Company using a big dinosaur as their "mascot". Looks like yet another deception by the cabal in order to keep low cost energy from the "slaves".

You can even insert automatic arbitration clause, and just force them to go to arbitration for settlement without going to court.

There are a few pretty cool ideas in there, particularly dealing with people's internal dialog in political and strategic thinking in tense situations. (Aspects of why it would be difficult or impossible to catch in a video form, without extensive narration) the only other element that was well done was to add the notes to put into perspective the individuals into a historical perspective.
Maybe just my opinion, but that series is one of the most heavily overrated pieces of fiction in a long time. It was very clear that the author borrowed much from Bedouin culture.
The most significant plot hole in the entirety is the spice. The spice is needed for interstellar travel, it can only be found on Arakis (originally), a location which they would have needed the spice to get to in order to acquire the space travel tech to reach the planet.
A) nothing, per se. For comparison, the book, "The Mote in God's Eye," there was a similar embracing of Islamic cultures, but kept people and groups distinct. Where the comparison might be a future where Islam had first taken over.
B) that's an interesting perspective, if anything the overall seemed more about the power of the mind over the impulsive desires of the body. Except in the framework of a variation on the heroes journey.

It might be overrated, there are definitely better scifi novels out there, but it's pretty great, and it has a lot of interesting political theory in it.
There is also the philosophical elements that I find quite interesting, especially the stoic teachings which are quite pronounced in contrast to the anti-stoic stories told these days.

I literally just read Dune and suggest everyone else here too.
Highly recommend it. It is politically and conversationally heavy in the first 20% or so but it holds up so well.
And the movie is actually very very close to the book too (at least the new one).

Really enjoyed the Books. I thought the William Hurt movie several years ago was a good effort.
The one in 2000? Yeah that was good. The 1980s one was shit lol.

The first and third books are excellent. They make a complete story. If you liked the first one, by all means pick up the third one.

Very good series of books. Everyone here is correct, a very good read that explains about governmental politics in an accessible way.
Very applicable to today's environment. It doesn't explain what is going on, it teaches you HOW to understand what is going on.

I didn't hate the books (the first one was best and by a margin), more if it was tagged as science fantasy, it might have been easier.

Agreed, the philosophy of mind over the bodies impulses was a strong theme, and the way it was implemented was done quite well in the first book.
