In addition to attempting to pad the IRS with an ungodly number of additional agents, the IRS still hasn't processed my 2021 tax return. I first filed it in March, by mail because Turbo Tax was glitching. I am owed over $3k. I checked in June to see if they'd processed it, and their website said they hadn't received it. Rather than call (where every agent gives you a different answer and leaves you with no proof of what was discussed), I wrote a cover memo over a second copy of my return and submitted it by mail again (this time with registration so I could prove it was sent and received). To this date, still no refund. Hard to imagine they could be that screwed up...

To be fair, I think something's always up with the IRS. I imagine it's hard to run a tight ship when you're basically the largest mafia organization in history and everybody knows it.
Probably the entire organization has been vaccinated and thus is coming down with a bad case of brain fog.
I think they're broke.
My ex wife and I filed and they said they couldn’t verify who she was because of her change of address last year. She had to send in her marriage certificate, and they’ve received it and everything, but they’re just not sending us our return. About $1,700. I think they’re broke.
They’re sure cashing the checks we’re sending them. We’re just thankful we were able to work out a payment option. They wanted $30,000.00 all at once
Interest rate is better at the bank once you figure in all the fee’s they will charge you. It would be extremely wise to look at this!
Thank you. I will!
Uh oh, did something get stuck in the money printer?
Try dealing with Social Security. I think incompetence is a job requirement for both agencies.
...for ANY gov't agency.
I've heard they are massively backlogged
I'm waiting for $15k. (Lost my job.) Last I checked they won't open it til October.
IRS us broken!
and now they will get 80,000 more incompetent people in there.Like every company in the US trying to find competent people ..good luck with this..we are going to get 80,000 hot dogs that thing they are superman/girl, hmmm maybe both at the same time. Running a company for over 25 years you find you need to hire about 10 people to find 1 good one. So they are going to try to find 800,000 people haha..good luck.then they need to be field trained and office trained. They will also need some sort of background in economics that lets out 2/3 of the population that cant even balance a check book...The IRS is already a mess this is going to be a major shitshow.......
Pick your poison. IRS has shredded about thirty million paper returns because they couldn't keep up.

All probably returns that are expecting money back, no doubt. How the heck could they possibly think that wouldn't come back to bite them in the butt?!
The IRS only three months ago paid my daughter her stimulus pymt from 2020. Out of the blue. After 6 or so bullshit letters saying they lost something, then "you must refile" then "we need 6 mod to resolve" etc etc. They are the most ridiculous disorganized mess.
I'm not American so I don't know the rules... but could they (IRS agents) not be "deputized" or whatever the proper term is and then do arrestssimilar to forest rangers/fish and game? Would that explain some of the large ammmo buys? That would be bad.
What if the "good guys" set this up as a plan for the future and they really do go after the +400k crowd. Along the lines of how they nailed Al Capone, at least it was something they got him for.
Hard to say at this stage of the game/movie.
I just got my refund last week from filing in February. Way behind it seems but did finally arrive.
Here's the opposite, my kid owes money. Had to file an ammended and all that, but anyway, IRS still hasn't taken the money from the bank account. I'm worried they are going to try to fine them for "not paying" even though it's on the IRS to take the money out.
No kidding. They seem to be all gung-ho when it comes to interest on late payments. I can't help but wonder if they'll be willing to pay interest on THEIR late payments?!
All the employees are in new hire training.
Why because the already hired and trained didn't get the poke? Were federal employees required to do so? I truly think they are going after everybody because the government is broke! SEVERELY!
YES!!! Me to! Turbo Tax fuck up saying when I tried to electronic file said "my AGI I entered does not match last years". WHAT!! IT pulled it over from last years return! Any way, I had to mail it in and that was the first week of April and NOTING as of yet! They own me money! Seems a lot of people are having the identical problems.
Tax accountant pede here. They are massively backed up on processing paper anything. Those that filed paper in February are getting their refunds now.
Yes, they do pay you interest.
If at all possible, file electronically going forward. My electronically filed clients got their refunds super quick this year. Some in less than a week.
Sounds like the real advice is that EVERYONE should file on paper from now on.
The goal should not be "getting your refund." The goal should be making the IRS unable to function at all.
Or set your withholding where you get nothing back. Then all file paper.
Sadly, most people still use tax refunds as a savings account. If I had a dollar for every time I’ve told clients to not let the government hold on to their money, but well .. you know the saying.
If people are trying to do that, I always recommend splitting their paycheck 90% into their regular account and 10% into a savings account. Most employers are happy to do that. Then, the $$ is still in your control.
My mother in law is owed a refund, and we got a letter stating that the refund amount will be applied to her 2022 taxes.
OOooooh that would make me mad! No way unless I've approved it first.
yeah, and she's 84, and this is several thousand dollars, so that would mean a lot to her
How much is she owed?
several thousand. She's 84, that would mean quite a bit to her.
Yes it would. I'd write a letter and tell them you want it refunded.
Do they pay you interest on the money they hold of yours, or is it only the people that pay interest on the money we “owe” them?
no, they did not offer any interest. It's a racket, I'm telling you. I'm liking the idea that 87000 IRS agents is comms for 187 the IRS.
