I don't ever recall hearing about this many derails. And I do not believe they occur every 1.5 hours in the U.S. I've typically heard maybe 3-4 per year. Nothing like what we're seeing here.

The tables I saw from an article written in 2019 or thereabouts had over 9k derailments a year in the early 80s and slowly falling towards recently with over 1000k per day. Pretty easy to find with a decent search engine.
Ill say this, in the middle of 2020 i ordered ammo that the shipment was delayed on. The reason for the delay was a train derailment. I thought that was odd and looked into how often it happens and the statistics were staggering, up in the thousands per year. So i believe the media is just reporting on them more since the ohio event.

That’s right, any time a rail car leaves the track it is classified a derailment. I used to work at a company that received raw materials by rail. The railroad there had cars slip off the tracks a couple times. They called each event a derailment.
The cargo has a big impact on public awareness too. If seven rail cars filled with pallets of breakfast cereal fall over in a farm field people don’t pay much attention. But, understandably, cars filled with hazardous chemicals leave a lasting impression because of their damaging impact.
Train collision or derailment every 1.5 hours. With that kind of frequency, would anyone believe that train travel and shipping would be deemed safe enough for continuation?
Perhaps they define collision as inclusive of the bumping to cars that can happen when a train is being joined to more cars in the train yard? Seems like that would pad the statistics.
Or maybe this is a worldwide statistic inclusive of 3rd world nations with poor infrastructure and high accident percentages.

The country I was born in has an incredibly dense rail network and about 20 times less inhabitant than the US. This would mean a derailment would occur 2 times per three days (20 × 1.5 h).
And yet derailment is very rare. I have heard of it three times in my lifetime.

They don't. Most of those are collisions, very minor. Also, anytime a wheel gets off kilter, it's technically a derail when all it takes is minor repair. Nothing like having an axle on fire on a hazardous goods train for thirty miles and administration overrides the standard safety procedures until it melts off.
I live in an area with TONS of train crossings. Never, ever heard of a derailment near us. We get so many trains going by daily that the train whistles are just background noise like birds chirping.
My uncle worked for a company in West Virginia that would travel from the east coast to the mid west cleaning up derailed trains. Sometimes he would be gone for 6-8 weeks at a time. The company stayed very busy and had multiple clean up crews. He spent 40 years with that company. Died of cancer a few years after he retired.

collisions do not always equate to derailments. that's how you mislead people, include a rare occurrence with a common occurrence, which causes the weak minded to focus on the rare, b/c it is "more", "worse", "bigger", "more costly", and believe it is an equivalently occurring action.
