Which is his legacy. Either his legacy is to be defeated and deleted from history, or his legacy is to save America and leave his name in the annals of history in a positive light. If he simply didn't care about his legacy, he would just be floating through life.

Spirit and flesh. The flesh drives towards a certain goal; it's part of our nature. And yet, in subjugating and disciplining the flesh, we find a full unity with the source.
Self is not the only, or lasting motivation, imo.
When you realize that you are part of something greater than self, then selfless becomes real.

Humans operate off of "Risk Vs Reward" on a deep subconscious level. It's how our brains make "Fight or Flight" decisions.
A reward can be simple as "I feel good for helping people".
