The normies love their credentialism, they only trust "authoritative sources" and do not have the habit of critically evaluating all sources like we do.
Therefore, the fact that the existing "authority" class of celebs doesn't get the free status badge means that they have to compete on merit in the information war.
That's not how it's supposed to work according to them. That's why they deride Catturd, because he is an anon who competes on merit not status.
The continuing histrionics over needing to reverify, I think, is actually pointing toward something else- what if it's not the measly $8? What if many of them actually cannot verify?

I'm pretty sure the blue check mark means the account is verified to be that person (usually someone famous) as opposed to a fake account by someone impersonating him or her.

It’s evolved to be a stamp of approval, that the individual adheres to the platform’s values and ideals.

The blue check mark gave them an air of legitimacy, so they could say any bullshit that they wanted, and be seen as an authority. Now that people can just buy them, they have lost that ability, and have to be interpreted based on the merits of their speech like the rest of us.
I believe they want the blue check mark without having to pay ultimately so they'll be seen as a "trusted source" of information. of course there's often an aspect of narcissism too. they're bitching going they'll win some supporters who cant believe Bette Midler or Joe Biden could possibly lose their blue check.

Well it came out in the twitter files dump that a lot of folks had been paying substantial cash under the table to twitter staff to get blue check marks so I’d guess those folks will be slaty at now being asked to pay more 😁

Some of them, at least, used to pay thousands for that check. They weren't happy to be devalued, or to find the plebiscite able to get one for $8.
