I think it's not totally 100% accurate to say that "you are responsible for your own debts", in that there are a lot of factors that cause those debts, e.g. parents pushing for universities, an overall and incorrect stance that in order to get anywhere in life you need a degree, predatory problems, etc.
The solution isn't to "forgive student debt" on the burden of the taxpayer, but universities need to be defunded from governmental funds, people need to realize that poor kids can be just as smart as white kids degrees aren't an end-all, and there are plenty of options for those who are willing to learn new skills and work on improving those skills.
We need to push back on the culture that pushes children into making these awful decisions, and we need to push back on these universities for hiking prices endlessly. The whole thing is a scam, intrinsically so.
Professors requiring their own textbooks every year which prevents you from getting secondhand, because edition A is no longer relevant because edition B changes "the" to "The" or other bullshit reason.
It's only funny because they were pushing debt forgiveness for people who are the types who support them, but a lot of other kids are caught up in predatory practices.
$1200+ a month is simply not sustainable for most people on top of their other bills, especially with compound interest and whatnot.
TL;DR: Degrees are practically paid for through predatory means and they're trying to shove it on to the taxpayer, but just because we are winning on the front that protects the taxpayer, it doesn't mean it isn't a multifaceted and serious issue that needs to be cracked down on in other ways. Kids are too young to be taking on this kind of burden, spurred on by societal expectations, and it's up to the people who have matured enough to see this from the other angles of the core problems.
And sure enough, we have seen several "falls" right at the end of June. Roe v Wade, AA, Colorado "human rights" committees, etc. Roe especially. Name one issue more important to the left than abortion.
Affirmative Action is interesting. I had a doc appointment, TV in lobby had NBC Fake News on. They were bitching their lungs out about it, all sorts of histrionics and meltdowns. I was in to see the doc, about 40 minutes. Come back out to lobby. They are STILL bitching about it, they had preempted their entire lineup to have "special coverage" of them bitching about it.
Any theories as to why the screaming meltdown over AA getting shitcanned? I have a few. First they hate the constitution being applied to something they like and being told "no". They only like the constitution when it suits their interest to do so.
I would also bet that a lot of the DEI stuff is a big money funnel to leftist interests. Ohio State U released their DEI budget figures and it's a staggering amount. Harvard hired Fauxahontas knowing full well she wasn't no dang native american. Mass/Feds probably gave Harvard grant money for filling that professorship slot.
Finally, I think it's elitism. Take Harvard. A ton of their students are ALDC's. Or Athlete on scholarship, "Legacies" (dad, uncle, etc went to Harvard), Donor's kids, or children of staff/faculty. Admission for the L's and D's keeps the alumni dollars flowing in so they can buy their kid a slot at Harvard. The non ALDC students they can pick and choose who they want based off of race quotas, political ideologies, etc. The Left is pissed they cannot any longer restrict access to left-run institutions or pick/choose who gets into the elite colleges like they used to.
I wish they did more to make it merit-based, like removing legacy and donor admissions. I remember seeing a stat that said only 57% of white admissions into Harvard were based on merit.
Take government funding (which also includes influence) and lending out of education and all the problems will solve themselves.
Churches and private groups originally started virtually every historically great educational institution (and hospital) then were run out by government and / or commies.
