I know some people think term limits will save us from ourselves, but it won't change a thing.
I like the idea if we find someone we like in office we should have the choice to keep them as long as we want. The Founders never added term limits I believe for several reasons.
I think they didn't add them because they added mechanisms to get office holders out: they are called elections. Also, I think institutional knowledge is good if those we hire to govern us at any level are competent and honest.
Imagine this. Pretend we didn't have term limits for President. Imagine if Ronald Reagan had a third term. Maybe we'd never would have to put up with the Bush junta at the Presidential level. If Clinton had a third term maybe 911 would have never happened or at least the Iraq war maybe wouldn't have happened. Maybe we'd still would have balanced budgets and paid down the debt even more.
I think the idea of term limits is lazy. I think it is a cop-out and dangerous. If we find someone good we should be able to keep them.
Term limits will affect Trump if he returns. One and done this time. I just think Presidential term limits are wrong, and I don't see the states limiting their ability to term limit senators either and for good reason. Maybe we should go back to the states appointing the senators instead.
That is my two cents worth.
The whole point of term limits is to prevent it from turning into a career.
When someone sees something as a career. It changes their mindset.
A person will start to look out for their career first.
Then, We the People should have the option of firing them, when necessary. After all, we are the boss.
Especially dangerous with religion, people who make a career out of God.
If we had "REAL" and "FAIR" elections, then term limits would be unnecessary. Term limits are a knee jerk and poor solution to the ACTUAL problem of unfair/illegitimate elections combined with propaganda.
exactly...its not the terms it is the money and propaganda. That is why I pointed out maybe the states should go back to appointing senators.
first thing that needs to happen is to stop all the big money pacs, the lobbyist money, get rid of Soros and everyone like him,all the big corporate money....let them be funded by the people electing them not selected for what they owe these people...........
The original idea of somebody serving in office, was supposed to be a sacrifice. People had lives, families, etc.. I’m not even sure they got paid for it. So, after a few years, people are happy to move on and have somebody else take their place.
It’s a career now, and all of the stipends they get for travel, and God only knows what else, makes it a very attractive deal. People are going to do whatever the Machine tells them to, so they can stay in their comfortable lives.
With or without term limits, this is what we have devolved into.
I am not so concerned with term limits, but you say election fix that, and they do if the elections are honest.
However, I don't like that a turd that shows the people he is a bought and paid for turd still gets to serve out his full term. When a rotten apple is uncovered there should be a way to eject them immediately.
Non corrupt elections have built in term limits. If you do your job and fight for the people, I think the people should have the right to elect you over and over LEGITIMATELY. If you become lazy and corrupt, we should also be able to legitimately vote in a new representative. Fair elections have consequences.
We have term limits here in Oklahoman. We lost some good men every year, and they are replaced with good men.....
If the states were still choosing senators (I think it was the 27th amendment that changed that) we'd definitely have a majority of republicans, probably a super majority.
We don’t need term limits, we need the death penalty for participating in cheating in ANY election. It is a betrayal to theh people and the country. That will send a STRONG message to the mules who help cheat for cash. They will also name names when facing death.
I agree something should be done but terms limits without corralling the administrative bureaucracy will make the unelected administrators even more powerful...
Term limits will also stop most of the 'selling' of favors by long term powerful Congressmen, which is exactly why schumer/pelosi/Mac/feinstien have been able to Warp the US.
Politics is politics and no matter what favors will always be done because that is politics. Not all favors are bad, and term limits will do little if nothing to stop politicking and favors. Now getting money out of campaigns might help, but that is a huge might.
Public servants that want to serve The People elected by the People will not accept dirty money and report Illegal bribes to the DOJ, which will be forced to prosecute it, because a Senator or Congressman will enforce it.
I agree. I'd allow states to set them for their reps, if they want. But it's fantasy land to discuss it now. First things first, fix the election systems. With an honest vote then we can have a real discussion.
With your logic then, the illegitimate president who is in office now, could stay indefinitely because they could just keep cheating.
No read my post. I never mentioned criminals should get a free ride. So your reply has zero to do with my 'logic'.
Yes, but you’re operating under the delusion that people are going to be held accountable.
Right now, if we had no term limits for president, Joe Biden could be president indefinitely. So yes, it does matter what I’m saying.
accountability will come sooner or later but it will come. I'm not under any delusion. That is why I pointed out that maybe states should appoint senators instead of electing them. That might help.
Appoint…..
Hilarious
Username checks out!
What is hilarious?
Didn't state governors appoint senators originally? It was their job to represent the views of the state and the Representatives represented the people.
We need same day voting hand counted paper ballots and an honest media. Terms will take care if themselves, also no term limits for President
I believe it would just turn into tag team congressing
Jefferson wanted term limits, until the Civil War congress at least followed Washington's example. 90percent of all congressmen each term were freshmen. people would do their civic duty and serve as a congressman for a term. with term limits there should be no passing of a seat to a family member in event of a death. and yes, the Senate should go back to the states.
If elections were reliable then, OK, maybe we do not need term limits.
However, you become aware of all the underhand things you can do if you are in any job long enough. Term limits would halp to cap that behaviour.
There will always be bribery and blackmail.
Make the extortionate start blackmailing new people every 4 years rather than doing it just once and controlling a politician for life
