Canadian here who worked in a grocery store and a family owned produce shop that was 90% locally sourced. Two points : First, ( as commented below ) strawberry season is over not long after summer ends in Canada. Second, organic is always more expensive. No real strangeness here to be honest.
Ah, to return to the days when organic was just default.
Although Monsanto probably gene locked the soil by now.
$1 a berry is never justifiable lol
Unless it’s chocolate covered
I am going to hijack this first comment with some reading for all to do on the exfiltration of middle class wealth and how they implement it. This is an area that Sundance at The Conservative Treehouse has explored extensively. He shows great insight into this process and I think all anons here and everywhere should at least have a basic understanding of how it works.
This first link is to a search on the subject at the Treehouse that will lead you to many articles on the subject:

This link is my favorite that explains the nuts and bolts of this malfeasance and exploitation:
https://theconservativetreehouse.com/blog/2017/07/17/multinational-corporations-and-the-export-of-american-wealth/
This is a worldwide problem but the American middle class is the largest repository of wealth in the world and the userers, criminals and con men cant be having that.
yeah but $13 fucking dollars? That is beyond ridiculous.
Welcome to Canada lol. 2 litres of milk is $5 plus tax
2 liters is roughly 1/2 a gallon.
A gallon of organic grass fed costs between $6-7.50 in Texas.
It's $2.99 for a gallon of store brand Vitamin D whole milk.
To be fair it is not berry season anywhere near Canada and the fruit has to be imported.
Yeah if you think about it - it's kind of a miracle that they can get fresh strawberries all the way to canada before they get rotten and still sell them for only $1 each
Not really a miracle... haven't you heard of trucks? $1 each berry is absurd... please.

Funny!
True, but even these organic ones off-season would've cost about eight dollars a couple years ago.
But they're organic
(Mexican picker probably pissed on them)
But seriously... they're out if season my little city slicker friends...
Genocide is coming...
correction...
it's here
Strawberries are high priced where I am too, so I leave them at the store and move on. Odd that I don't feel Genocided though.
oh boy... I suggest you read up on the planned destruction of agriculture and livestock
you're on the traintracks, kid, and being glib about it
Where would I 'read up' on this planned destruction of agriculture and livestock?
I'm on the train fren.

Your not fooling anyone here
Nor am I trying to fool anyone here.
How did you get elected spokesman for everyone here, by the way?
I live in Canada (but am American) and they're not even close to that price where I live. Remember, in land mass, Canada is twice as big as the US. What's true on the east coast of either country, is not necessarily true on the west coast of these two countries. I'm guessing that price, aside from being organic, is in the Yukon, NWT etc. where things must be flown in. Alaska will be facing the same type of inflation, especially remote, fly in villages. So let's look at the whole picture, no pun intended, not just a photo!
Mega grocery chains take the opportunity to gouge the shit out of the consumer. The shame is that most of the produce will go rotten.and the chains will have to lower their prices. Short term thinking by stupid companies. I, like most consumers will shop elsewhere and they will have to lower their prices to earn the trust of the consumer. Boomerang. The invisible hand of Adam Smith.
Remember Soylent Green?
Everything is on purpose to further their plan.
Not berry related, but I needed mayo yesterday, the best foods regular size jar was 13.99, for f'ing mayo.
Mayo's easy to make, and much better fresh. Check the Internet. Same with mustard.
I'm not sure the US is much better. I just paid $27 for a chuck roast - ON SALE. SMH
Per lb.? Satire
$6.97 CAD a pound at Walmart.ca versus $4.12 USD a pound at Walmart.com based on the locations that got picked when I did it.
However $4.12 USD is $5.56 CAD. So about 25% more expensive before taxes. Having lived in Canada for a number of years that's roughly what I'd expect. The interesting thing to me is when I lived there the Canadian dollar was at parity with the US dollar and everything was still 30% more expensive than in the US.
You didn't say they were organic
This is a classic case of showing how fast food places are subsidized and fresh food is not. You could probably get a large meal from the place of the Golden Arches for $13. Does it beg the question as to why they want you to eat processed crap instead of fresh fruits? I would say depop is not just by the clot shot.
Yup its messed up.
If that's 12.99 Canadian, it's $9.62 US. Still a lot for strawberries. And yes - way out of season. Price should come down when no one buys them.
They were playing the original version of Strawberry Letter 23 on the Sirius Xm Radio yesterday, so they're predicting we still have a way to go.
well when you gotta ship them 1000 miles north...i bet asparagus is like 10 bucks too.
That is just going to rot. What a waste of produce.
Canada is Northern Mexico.
Costco Alaska $9.00 for 2lbs. Or $4.50 per lb. 12/2/2023
I guess I'll eat nothing. LOL.
Erm. Strawberries are a late Spring fruit. Why are you even considering buying those?
Correct me if I'm wrong, but is it not the beginning of Winter over in Canada? Those strawbs were either grown in an overheated hot-house, or they have been flown from Australia or New Zealand.
All that stuff costs money. And yes, oil is used to transport or heat glass-houses - So, what you are really complaining about is: oil-prices.
Those are Driscoll's strawberries and they were grown in California.
Strawberries can be planted and harvested in Oxnard, CA pretty much year round. It is one of Driscoll's main hubs in California.
Driscoll's Central Mexico hub is distributed to Arizona, Texas and Florida. I doubt they're reaching Canada.
I am looking at Driscoll's list of growing regions they have posted on their website. Not sure if it's a Brave browser thing, but it only loads up as a background; the information chart appears once I scroll down.
In Oxnard, CA it is strawberry season every month of the year except July and August.
