Well I believe it starts with our present public education system. It simply does not teach critical thinking skills. We home schooled for about 23 years - way before the internet. We were attacked harshly by family & friends. Yet all for of my children obtained full scholarships to college and all 4 are what I'd call critical thinkers.

My mother thought the same in the early 90s. My five siblings and I were all homeschooled K-12 and we have all become decent members of society. We’re all still very close and love our parents dearly, such a blessing to have created deep bonds as children.
It baffled me also - until I found the research conducted over many decades indicating that 80% of all people do NOT think for themselves. They are the human equivalent of sheep, whose only desire is to follow along with whatever herd they belong to.
Trying to convince one of the sheep using facts and proof is pointless. Their minds ARE built differently compared to those that are capable of independent thought.
If you want to change the behavior of the sheep, you have to change the behavior of the herd as a whole. It happens slowly, until a tipping point is reached, after which it happens much more rapidly. The best way to accomplish that is by using stories - such as the plot of a movie for example... wink, wink.

I worked with a gentlemen that went into the Navy as an electrician, only to find out that he realized he was color blind (not a good thing if you're not sure you're connecting a green wire or a red wire!!). We may be somewhat of the opposite of that, finding out that we have an extra ability (critical thinking and/or others) that we thought everyone had.
