The electoral college was designed to protect the influence of the small states. Even the smallest state gets 3 out of 538. But I don’t think the founders thought it would get as skewed as it is now.

States located between the coastal states are naturally less populated so they are over-represented in the Electoral College. Otherwise they would always get the shaft from the coastal states.
