Piggybacking bc you're the top comment: It's not quite as it seems.
There are already voter ID requirements in place in California to ensure voters are eligible when they vote. The law that Newsom just signed prevents local governments from creating additional laws on top of the already existing laws.
"In most cases, a California voter is not required to show identification to a polling place worker before casting a ballot."
"However, if you are voting for the first time after registering to vote by mail and did not provide your driver license number, California identification number or the last four digits of your social security number on your registration form, you may be asked to show a form of identification when you go to the polls."
"May be asked" has usually meant "will be asked" in disclaimers like these. There might be other procedures in cases where that happens. It's like at a stadium where they say "disruptors may be asked to leave" which means, yeah, they're kicking you out bud.
You also note that the form does ask for the license number/SSN, meaning that's a requirement to actually register
“State election law already contains robust voter ID requirements with strong protections to prevent voter fraud, while ensuring that every eligible voter can cast their ballot without hardship. Imposing unnecessary obstacles to voter participation disproportionately burdens low-income voters, voters of color, young or elderly voters, and people with disabilities.”
So it looks like the law prevents local governments from making additional laws. There are still pre-existing Voter ID laws that are in place in California.
The bill still relies on the Democrats-as-the-real-racists claim that people of color are so dumb that for them obtaining an ID is a burdensome obstacle. The commies are so desperate for votes from non-citizens that they think it’s worth insulting black Americans.
The comments that democrats are making are that resources in predominantly black neighborhoods are notoriously low, in terms of available places to renew as well as information resources. The "too stupid" thing is kind of a cartoonish way to put it
I already acknowledged that the bill bans local additional ID requirements, but the statement you quoted includes,
Imposing unnecessary obstacles to voter participation disproportionately burdens low-income voters, voters of color.”
If an American citizen, CA resident, and eligible voter already has a valid ID and uses it to comply with CA’s existing voter ID requirement, then an additional local voter ID requirement wouldn’t be an obstacle or an imposition. It would just be redundant. So why pass this bill? Because the CA commies are planning on at least not enforcing the existing voter ID state law, and are possibly planning on repealing it. They want to preclude the possibility of local laws taking its place. Notice the weaselly sequence they chose.
Don’t waste your time playing devil’s advocate with Democrats’ bullshit claims. “low… information resources” is their way of euphemizing ‘uninformed and unresourceful’. How concerned for black Americans’ supposed lack of ID resources were the Democrats in the 20th century when the logistics of getting an ID might’ve actually been more difficult and blacks had less wealth, but when there were also far fewer non-citizens in the US? The Democrats didn’t mention it at all because there was less of an opportunity for them to get non-citizens voting. 20th century Democrats were also better people than current Democrats. They took their losses to Republicans such as Reagan without becoming ridiculous traitors.
If an American citizen, CA resident, and eligible voter already has a valid ID and uses it to comply with CA’s existing voter ID requirement, then an additional local voter ID requirement wouldn’t be an obstacle or an imposition
It would depend on what that additional requirement was.
“low… information resources” is their way of euphemizing ‘uninformed and unresourceful’.
Actually there are proven fewer resources available to them. Communities are built on the resources available, which is why most often the best towns/neighborhoods have good access to public education and resources. Well maintained roads, responsive emergency services, green space, etc. All things that are funded by taxpayers and built/maintained by the government.
Historically, in predominantly black communities, there was not as much government spending going into those communities. They had fewer resources and have struggled as communities, historically, because of it, and those struggles carry over to present day.
How concerned for black Americans’ supposed lack of ID resources were the Democrats in the 20th century when the logistics of getting an ID might’ve actually been more difficult and blacks had less wealth, but when there were also far fewer non-citizens in the US?
Probably not concerned enough! So hopefully those democrats are getting voted out of office. Most of them are probably dead though, considering I think you're talking about 60 years ago, so it's good that things are changing in favor of making more resources available so that we can have more high functioning communities.
It would depend on what that additional requirement was.“
It’s only “additional” in the sense that the requirement would be local and statewide. The requirement itself remains the same: voter ID. So it’s redundant. The commies aren’t afraid of redundancy. They’re afraid of the enforcement of any voter ID law.
Black Americans have said themselves that getting valid ID is easy and that virtually all functioning black American adults have already done it.
You don’t have to go back 60 years to notice the dearth of crybabying about ID resources. That line of complaint only started in the last few election cycles. In 2004, “Republican” George W Bush supposedly won 40% of the hispanic vote. Democrats had less to gain by risking the exposure of getting non-citizen hispanics to vote, so they had less reason to use black Americans as an excuse for not making hispanics show ID.
Democrats and RINOs have been using blacks as an excuse for resource embezzlement since before LBJ’s “Great Society” commie bullshit. From that time until about 2016 the commies didn’t mention voter ID laws being unfair, because they weren’t. Now we have millions of illegals in the country and in CA, more of whom are hispanic than black, and suddenly the commies claim that voter ID is a problem for black American citizens. It’s total bs.
Black Americans have said themselves that getting valid ID is easy and that virtually all functioning black American adults have already done it.
Lol you took a survey or something?
Democrats had less to gain by risking the exposure of getting non-citizen hispanics to vote, so they had less reason to use black Americans as an excuse for not making hispanics show ID.
Then I'm glad to see the new leaders we've elected since then show proper concern with making sure everyone has accessible resources to get their ID.
Laws may not have changed much, but resources have.
Not me, but other people have taken surveys. Lol at your lol.
You can do better than a survey and look up the percentages of black Americans over 18 yo in different states who have valid ID. DHS probably has all the numbers but I’m not sure they would share because they’re commies and the real numbers would blast a hole in their commie speaking point.
Then I'm glad to see the new leaders we've elected since then show proper concern with making sure everyone has accessible resources to get their ID.“
You’re acting as if this is a bill to build a new Department of Motor Vehicles location in Compton, South Central. It’s not. It’s just a bill that uses black Americans as a false excuse to reduce the chances that non-citizens who mostly aren’t black are required to show valid ID to vote.
...and even if, by some twist of fate they have no access to internet whatsoever in a modern city in california, there is the simple step of asking someone. (no free wifi!?!? not even a public library? christ, california is in worse shape than I thought if that's the case...)
oh, yeah, just head to the DMV, they'll tell you what you need, it's over on <streetname>."
Christ, if anything, Democrats are calling black americans stupid and lazy.
(no free wifi!?!? not even a public library? christ, california is in worse shape than I thought if that's the case...)
Yes, this is what I'm saying. In some places, particularly often in predominantly black neighborhoods, there aren't government allocated resources to a well-functioning public library that can offer wifi.
DMV resources are also often much more limited in these areas.
Hopefully this is appealed to the SC. Seems to me this is unconstitutional.

Doesn't sound like strong laws to me.

Lol no. It's like you haven't even been paying any form of attention to these last few elections.
You probably think Sharpies are normal to use on ballots too.
Are you referring to something specific? Or just general "this could happen"?
This guy needs to go live in Palestine, or Lebanon, or Iran, or Anywhere other than America.
You mean like San Francisco?
WATCH CA..
They will Appeal this to the SC and when this is overturned maybe this will be how they also require Voter IDs in all States in the future.
How do you make the Enemy beat themselves? Lol
"Hi, my name is Nancy Pelosi, and I'd like a ballot, please."
According to the statement:
So it looks like the law prevents local governments from making additional laws. There are still pre-existing Voter ID laws that are in place in California.
This is misleading.
Thanks for the clarification.

Well, no, because the law still requires an ID.

Actually, it's being generous, considering all it takes is basic literacy and a willingness to seek out the information.

Big surprise
Uhm….no.
“Papers, please.” This is exactly what the DS wants.
Here in CA, it's "No papers, bigots!"
Hopefully it gets challenged.
What he is really saying is that he's afraid the tide is turning.
It may be smart to carry an ID on you, at all times. Accidents happen.
But illegal to walk around without an ID?
Nope.
