"F/A-18 Super Hornets were flying above the US guided-missile cruiser USS Gettysburg during anti-Houthi missions in the region when the Navy launched a pair of surface-to-air missiles from the ship."
Why are WE flying anti-Houthi missions??
Do most Americans trying to get by, even know where Yemen is, and why we are defending the Red Sea?? Much less care? [Heck there are unexplained drones flying all over the US . . . ]
NOT OUR JOB. We are energy independent, and the main benefit of that is NO MORE FOREIGN WARS FOR OIL!!
Let the nations bordering international waters they need for their shipping, defend them!
Yes this commander looks like a twirp. His demeanor does not instill confidence.
We are not yet BACK to energy independence. Hopefully, that will come with Trump. The importance of interference in the global transport of goods (not just petroleum) is that price will follow inverse to supply. All the transport of goods from Asian suppliers to Europe and America goes through the Hormuz Straits-Red Sea-Suez Canal. It is not a local geographic problem. (The alternative is to go around the Horn of Africa, a much longer voyage.)
We are energy independent by definition. Importing oil is not necessary and it is not prudent to undertake military action to secure the transport of oil, which we do not need.
Other nations who need Middle Eastern oil can secure it along with the regional nations.
So then the OTHER goods will be free to travel in international waters at well.
As long as we have to purchase oil from foreign sources, we are de facto NOT "energy independent" (as we once were, briefly). We have to make policy on the basis of economic reality, not idealism. Also, keep in mind that the PRICE we pay on oil is determined by the world market, as it will make sense for our oil producers to sell it at high prices to others who are able to buy it. No relief at the gas pump.
It is not only oil that is transported through the Red Sea. It is EVERYTHING. You distort your thinking by not considering all the facts. Suppose no oil was being transported: there would still be a monumental problem if the Red Sea was blocked from traffic. Very few "other nations" have the naval capability to keep the Red Sea open, and it is not very clear that we do, either.
Transport around the Horn of Africa is much more expensive. Enough to severely compromise the supply of goods. Tossing this off as being of no import is, well, short-sighted to say the least.s
The Houthis are simply 21st-century pirates and should be dealt with as such. Only a strong naval power has ever been able to deal with pirates. It may hurt US more to tolerate them, than to put them out of business.
'Very few "other nations" have the naval capability to keep the Red Sea open'
And WHY is that?? Inquiring minds would like to know, why OUR blood and treasure are counted upon to protect international shipping lanes for ALL Nations!
Put together, the needs for international shipping and free trade through the Red Sea benefit more nations put together than US by some magnitude.
It is time for them to step up. Where is the British Navy anymore? Japan has a Navy. Why does not e.g. India?
Why do the exporters and importers of goods and services not have to defend the shipping lanes?? Why have they not developed the Naval Power to protect their own interests??
SIMPLE. Since WW II the US was the only power left standing!! [Other than the nefarious USSR]. But now all their war-ravaged economies have recovered. They have the largess to fund social benefits, because they are STILL relying on the WW strength of the US -- But THEY NOW have the economies to support their own defense interests! And it is time and beyond time.
NO MORE. Our Republic is NOT the policeman of the world, just because we managed to win WW II when so many other nations were prostrate. They are prostrate no more!
So, you would rather tolerate an interruption of all trade (including ours) and/or a significant increase in prices? I guess so. The other navies do not have the capability of significant power projection.
Your reading of history is deficient if you think WE won World War II to the exclusion of other nations.
There is more to Yemen than this, its split into north and south with the Houthis in the north and the Yemini's in the south. After the British withdrawal from the Protectorate of Aden in 1967 the country went into a civil war and was partitioned into North and South Yemen.
The Soviets got involved and started a border war with Oman on order to invade Oman to give themselves control of the straights of Hormuz. This was stopped by British and Iranian forces in 1978.
There is no such thing as Houthi Rebels, they are just Houthis.
Biden sent a whole bunch of military personnel out to the red sea and yes, I know approximately where Yemen is. Now why are we there? I think Biden is trying to bankrupt us and that's why.
Hasn’t been relieved for “No Confidence”. So is this one blowing the DEI whistle where all the others said to go FO?
The articles are poorly written. The article a couple of days ago didn’t report a two plane mission where a jet with two pilots was shot down and another wasn’t hit.
What if the weapon systems on the ship have been compromised. I can’t believe two friendly fire occurrences so close together. Crews would be checking and double checking before firing after shooting down one of our own planes. It could be a quiet way of telling the US to sit on the sideline.
Also: breaking the encryption or small sabotage during maintenance to install rogue network.
But easiest way would be simply JAMMING at the right moment IFF system. Or to sabotage this system somehow. Or even kind of it's failure and lack of inspection being done.
My question is why are we flying our aircraft in the combat airspace where a ship needs to shoot down drones? There should be deconfliction of airspace. I've spent a bit of time in the CIC of an aircraft carrier and the TAO is always very on top of our aircraft not being in the defensive envelope of our escorts. This would seem espescially followed if there was an active air threat of enemy aircraft in that envelope. I would not be too hasty to call it a traitorous act. That guy's a captain and that takes some proving to get there. But as CO he is 100 percent responsible for the fuckups his Crew, especially his TAO cause. The pilots even hold some responsibility as well as the combat airspace ATC and their boss that let those aircraft be in the targeting area. Think about how it looks when a drone hits a ship and takes it out of commission because the ship couldn't defend because some friendly aircraft made itself a target? Planes are expensive but not like a ship. Wrong guys are being screwed with in my opinion. That ship absolutely must be able to defend itself. 3 or 4 hundred people count on it.
Friendly fire incidents are not uncommon. So, there is much that could be wrong about this story... I will reserve judgement until more info comes out.
The racism here is pretty fucking bad. Most Americans come from European descent, not born to native population. Not all of us Asians are anti American. We are not supposed to be the racist side.
There is sum ting wong with this picture.
Born in Alaska (supposedly)?
Anchor-babied in Alaska you say?
Looks Phillpeno...
Wei Too Lo? Ho Lee Fuk?
Nothing wrong with pic but something wrong on that ship.

You are misunderstanding some of the context.

Its a strategic shipping lane, that's why there are not only US and RN war canoes these but Chinese and other nations warships.
Still the primary defenders should be those there who have the ports.
Why can't Yemen and its allies get rid of their own Houthi rebels?? Within their own territories??
Why let them interfere with shipping? Why depend on US to protect their shipping?
Aren't the Arab nations rich to the extreme? Just saying.

He must be relieved of duty immediately. They are trying to decimate our military in a multi pronged approach.
I agree. Pending investigation.

Sanpaku eyes.😬
Don't have any clue what he is. Just that he is the commander.

Shiiieeet!
Not good.
Let me guess. DEI placement.
Could.

Hacked is what I thought when the first one was reported.
From what I understand from conversations with someone that maintains the networking on those ships, each ship is a completely isolated network.
Yes, they can communicate with other ships, but the network is completely isolated.
For a 'hack' to happen, it would have to come from the ship, itself.
Otherwise, the entire command infrastructure would have been compromised.
Way to go USN, you should blame the Russians, that one always works.

Thanks for the info.
Just another post almost same content: https://www.defenceconnect.com.au/naval/14701-us-navy-investigation-uncovers-illegal-starlink-wi-fi-plot-aboard-combat-vessel https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZBUxmEJumAw

They all should have been court marshalled and the main guy, Marrero, should have been dishonorably discharged in addition to the court marshal.
There is absolutely no room for that type of behavior on a combat vessel.
Someone said computer systems could be hacked. I can believe that.

Thanks for the info. I will reserve my judgement on that then. I was thinking he must be dipshit or DS.
Make em walk the plank
That would be the crew's job today. Merry Christmas Commander.
I would agree if he is DS.
Adm Pearl Harbour
Hope not.
Just a few more weeks. We got thes
Can't come soon enough.
u/brain_dead: does the ship communicate with other ships ? If the answer is "yes" those navy ship IS hackable.
It IS hackable if it can communicate with other ships. Period. Never underestimate hackers... Especially if they are your enemy. u/400DollarHandcart u/pente1776 u/Grady_Wilson
Not to mention there are soldiers who would gladly install some "unauthorized" network access point because you know - some "fun" after hours of service - example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZBUxmEJumAw https://www.defenceconnect.com.au/naval/14701-us-navy-investigation-uncovers-illegal-starlink-wi-fi-plot-aboard-combat-vessel
Thank you. It's a possibility.
I do not know whether they have access like that.
Friendly fire incidents are not uncommon. So, there is much that could be wrong about this story... I will reserve judgement until more info comes out.
Thanks. I understand.
That may suggest someone has put a hack in the software.
That or the commander is DS
So just what part or which military is the only way, or are we suppose to trust ?
You do know the military will be restored, correct?
Thank you….Way to wield logic.
So, how will we know the restored military from the rogue military, if we see them out and about ?
I have no idea.
Is that Don Lemon?
Howls.
Diversity works!
Diversity or DS?
Both.
Probably. LOL
The racism here is pretty fucking bad. Most Americans come from European descent, not born to native population. Not all of us Asians are anti American. We are not supposed to be the racist side.
You are correct. Edit to add: there are plenty of A-holes in the military of all ethnicities.
I am sorry. It wasn't me. I love all people because we are all God's children and precious no matter what race, creed or color.
This Captain and his fire crew are NOT combat ready!
Got trigger fingers.
Is that aviation wings he has above his hero badges?
Surface Warfare officer: https://www.priorservice.com/suwaofba.html
Thanks.
I am just a brain-dead, I wouldn't know.
He is a Black Shoe ( Surface Warfare Pin ) and not a Brown Shoe ( wears Naval Aviator Wings )
Found the Navy guy! (85-05 for me, MM1)
