There was a case a few years ago near me where a white kid was beat to death by a few when he tried to break up a fight. It is really not safe to associate with them in general terms. If you bring a knife or a gun or any other weapon to a school event, you are anticipating a need for that weapon. He had already thought of a scenario at a track meet where a knife was necessary. Premeditated.

I’m sure the real story is somewhere in the middle but no one should go to a track meet and be stabbed to death. We have no security at these meets (you park and walk in) but my niece said her coach told them everything will change next year. So sad. I remember as a kid (decades ago) leaving on my bike after lunch with friends and mom yelling “be home by dinner” and that was all we had to worry about. :(

I talked with my niece. Both boys were known bullies and they got into a fight the night before. But with all the stories I’m not sure what she told me is any more reliable than anything else. She told me that Karmelo was not even on the track team. She said that he skipped school specifically to come to that track meet and get into a fight. If that is true, there is absolutely no doubt that it is first-degree murder that was premeditated. I have tried my best to research and have been unable to find any confirmation that he was part of the school track team. If that is truly the case, I am so disappointed in the news, not providing that information.

For the students, when they get to their school, they have to give their bag to their coach to have a thorough search, including with a metal detector. The bag then goes directly on the bus and cannot be touched by the student until they get to the meet when they give them the bag back once they are inside the venue. then there will be random checks by people throughout the track meet looking in different bags for any weapons. Girls will need to have clear plastic purses that are see-through.
