Our second grandson (first child of one of my daughters) was born on Monday night and came back to my daughter's house today. Earlier this evening the little guy coughed up some brownish gunk that looked like it could be oxidized blood. My daughter and son in law took him back to the hospital to get checked out. I would appreciate any prayers for this little angel! Thank you!

Prayers to your precious grandson
Thank you! I probably won't know the result of the return trip to the hospital until tomorrow morning. My poor daughter and son in law haven't slept much in the past three days!
Will definitely pray.... Please keep us updated
Prayers for you and your grandson.
I doubt there is anything to worry about, it could be normal. It is not uncommon for babies to spit up discolored mucus, I have seen newborn baby's cough up all sorts of nasty looking stuff.
Did she have a C section or deliver him naturally? If she had a C section, sometime all the nasty stuff is not expressed from the airways and it comes out later. Natural delivery squeezes that nasty stuff out as they come through the birth canal.
The color of a mother's first milk, known as colostrum, is typically yellowish or light brown color.
Depending on the baby's lung sounds at birth, respiratory effort and secretions in the airway, often they suction the baby's airway using a catheter to remove secretions. This could cause some slight trauma, and some small amount of blood may be present later, it is nothing to worry about.
Was there any meconium in the in the amniotic fluid when the baby was born?
Sometimes, the baby can have a bowel movement in utero. (meconium).
That stuff is like tar. If it gets in the lungs, things go bad really quick.
However, if it happens during the labor process, the lungs may not be affected, and you got lucky. It may get in the mouth, oral airway and on the skin. It doesn't cause any issues oxygenation or ventilation, but it could discolor the saliva if the hospital staff do not get it out. Not that the hospital did anything wrong, like I said, it is like tar, you can't remove it, it is something that happens over time.
I have worked in the NICU/PICU for close to 30 years. Present at the beside for countless deliveries and C sections. Babies coughing up nasty looking stuff is normal, that is what they do, don't worry yourself.
I am so grateful you are posting this, hoping to reassure everyone in the family!
Thank you for your information, and you being willing to share your experience and expertise for these many years.
Lord guide the hearts, minds and hands of the medical staff as they treat this child. We pray for your healing and love as this family endures this difficult time. In Jesus name, Amen.
Amen!
Prayers for the little one, hope nothing serious is wrong. 🙏
Lifting him up in prayer 🙏
Praying that if there's anything wrong, they find it quickly and resolve the problem quickly!
Thank you all for your prayers! The report from my wife is that the baby is ok. Other than nobody getting any sleep, they are all ok. I don't know all the details on what happened, but any blood that was observed was apparently from my daughter's over-nursed nipple :) (the baby ignores one breast for some reason)
awesome news! all glory be to God! thanks for the update.
Yay!!!! Thank you for the update! Glad every thing is okay. Hard not to worry yourself sick over the little ones.
That’s fantastic news! God Bless you guys 🙏
So happy to hear. God bless you and your expanding family.
I am not a doctor, but it sounds like something I've heard of called Merconium Aspiration Syndrome.
With good care, he should be ok.
My prayers to you! 🙏🙏🙏🙏

This coughing up old blood is not uncommon, particularly in a vaginal birth. Babies swallaw alot of of secretions passing thrrough the birth canal and through the nose. Also babies in distress born by C- section delivery swallow blood and a brownish green meconium stool. Ii pray that your newborn grandson is okay. Pleease keep us informed.
OH GOD , IT’S A BABY BOY, I PRAY AND BEG YOU, PLEASE BLESS THIS SOUL🙏
Dear God a child of yours in in need. Please heal him.
And your sons name Jesus Christ.
Amen.

Is he on formula? It may just be a little after birth that was in his lungs. He cleared it and should feel a lot better. Father God, we decree and declare this little one hale and hearty in the name of your son, Jesus Christ - amen and amen.
So, after coming back from the hospital last night (everything was ok, and again, thank you for your prayers!), they were all up most of the night with the baby crying. They had a post-birth checkup already scheduled back at the hospital today, so my wife drove our daughter and baby there (husband was totally worn out :) ) and the baby was dehydrated! They are trying to give him pedialite, and hopefully will not need to do IV fluid replenishment. He may have to have breast milk supplemented with formula if he doesn't start gulping that natural milk down. Newborns are a joy and not so much joy sometimes :)
Prayers for you and your family's new little guy.
Great news! Thank you all for such kind prayers! Our grandboy received IV fluids and is doing well now! They were waiting for a good, healthy, wet diaper, and that milestone was reached :) He will be going back home today, and maybe, just maybe, the parents can finally get some sleep! God is good!
Just got the update from my wife. He is doing better. He is apparently getting the needed hydration, but they are waiting on a wet diaper as the indication :)
Dear God, please help this little fellow. He is so loved and so wanted.
In the name of Your Beloved Son, Jesus, Amen
Praying for you guys. He’s going to be fine, my friend. 🙏
Prayers up.
