True! Sperm whales were hunted almost to extinction for their oil, which was used mainly to light homes with.
That doesn't mean Rockefeller was a decent human being; only that capitalism tends to creates benefits for all as a side-effect of people working their asses off to create income and wealth for themselves.
Not really. Whale oil was used mostly for lighting, lubrication and making soap. You are thinking about coal oil and it's been around for over 3,000 years. Originally discovered in China. It started being commercially mined here in America in 1749. Kerosene is a whole nuther ball game. It's more like diesel fuel and in many cases can be used instead of diesel. Very poor for illumination, good for heating.
Actually, there used to be a private market for electricity, and it was very competitive, before the federal law requiring all electric plants to have a federal license. Without that law, electricity would've provided a big boost to local sovereignty and economic freedom.
To the point I have to take a shoe off and touch my bare foot to the ground to ground myself before touching something metal, whether a car door, a shopping cart, or the refrigerator handle.
Do you want to live in constant danger of hearing that SNAP and that STING whenever you touch something metal?
No one helped the poor more than Jesus Christ. For we are all poor, not a righteous one among Us. "You say I am rich I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing. But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked" (Revelations 3:17) Jesus Christ "He that knew no sin, became sin (took our sin) (offered us his righteousness) that we might become the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus"(2 Corinthians 5:21) This is true wealth, change the spirit and you change the direction of the ship.
All true, but there's also something to be said for those who worked to mandate safety covers on machinery, who stopped allowing child labor, and who brought in the 40 hour week, just to name a few examples.
Who are these "kids" you're talking about? Were you never a child? Does your idea include you also? Are you sad that you never got the work in the coal mines as a five year old?
But don't let your memes be dreams! Send your kids right now to Ghana! That cobalt isn't going to dig itself out of the ground!
The eight-hour day movement (also known as the 40-hour week movement or the short-time movement) was a social movement to regulate the length of a working day, preventing excesses and abuses of working time.
The modern movement originated in the Industrial Revolution in Britain, where industrial production in large factories transformed working life. At that time, the working day could range from 10 to 16 hours, the work week was typically six days, and child labour was common.
He wanted to give the world free energy but was thwarted by the deep state. He did invent alternating current which improved electricity, I think in the delivery.
Correct! Edison favoured Direct Current (DC) while Tesla preferred Alternating Current (AC). The problem with Edison's system was that you needed another power station every few blocks because the voltage dropped over long distances.
Basically, volt drop depends on the amount of current and the length (resistance) of the cable.
Using AC meant that transformers could be used and they work a bit like gearboxes. You can reduce the torque by increasing the speed and vice versa. With a transformer you can greatly increase the voltage and so reduce the current when transmitting energy. Lower current so lower losses.
DC cannot be stepped up and down so easily.
I seem to recall that Edison said that electric chairs should be powered by AC in an attempt to make AC sound more dangerous than DC!
To piggyback on this excellent post for anyone interested, AC and DC both have their strengths and weaknesses, so it's a right tool for the job situation.
Simplified, DC is better for small applications, AC is better over distance. Your computer is all DC on the inside. The power line to your house and most of the wiring in it is AC. That's why your electronics need an AC adapter, the big body plug, instead of just a regular plug. It converts AC to DC.
If we're handing out credits these three come to mind as preeminent.
Maxwell for the mathematical theory.
Tesla for alternating current generation, transmission, and conversion.
Edison for the light bulb.
My mother grew up on a backwater farm that was not much above subsistence living. I once asked her what was the most impactful invention that you've experienced during your lifetime? She answered: electricity.
Credit for inventions is always problematic. Invariably, development of any new idea is a gradual process and many people will be involved. The one who typically ends up with the credit is the one who is the best publicist and that often coincides with the one who made the most money from it!
Thomas Edison's electricity was DC which doesn't transport well. Nikolai Tesla brought us electricity from Niagara Falls to New York city. Edison could not do that.
Rockefeller saved the wales by inventing and marketing kerosene

Nor was Ford. He sold trucks to the Germans in WWII
Not enough to make up for everything else he did.
I didn't say he was a good man....
Just that he saved the wales.
The Prince of Wales is forever grateful.
Correct, but he did sell the shit out of it and saved the wales.

Electricity is how they could charge us for power. It almost single-handedly made us all slaves ( along with usury and taxes )
And before that, they did the same with oil.
Actually, there used to be a private market for electricity, and it was very competitive, before the federal law requiring all electric plants to have a federal license. Without that law, electricity would've provided a big boost to local sovereignty and economic freedom.
Cool. Enjoy your candles
I want Tesla free energy that isn’t metered please. Candles are for birthdays.
And get shocked from touching anything metal because it's transmitted through the air?
There's electricity in the air right now.
It's called radio.
Go outside and touch metal.
Are you dead? Are you shocked? Did you feel anything at all?
Check out "Single Wire Earth Return" systems.
Check out "The Pacific DC Intertie."
I shock myself on a lot of things.
To the point I have to take a shoe off and touch my bare foot to the ground to ground myself before touching something metal, whether a car door, a shopping cart, or the refrigerator handle.
Do you want to live in constant danger of hearing that SNAP and that STING whenever you touch something metal?
Drink more water.
And evaluate every day risks more reasonably.

Think of all the "work ethic" they'll aquire!
You have no interest in childhood human rights.
The 40 hour work week was created by Henry Ford, not the government.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eight-hour_day_movement
The Tolpuddle Martyrs started this and the Brit socialist unions bought the 40 hour working week into life. Plus something called the Weekend.
I get the sentiment of the quote, just chiming in that I thought it was more nikola tesla who brought innovation with electricity

It was startling to hear that spoken.

ROCK-A-FELLAR: Hold my beer. I am going to help the poor then kill them...that way I make twice as much
It was Tesla that brought "free" Electricity and was taken out by Edison...
Who will replace him as our country’s orator of wisdom?
Thomas Edison's electricity was DC which doesn't transport well. Nikolai Tesla brought us electricity from Niagara Falls to New York city. Edison could not do that.
