Did we every hear more about that? If someone is collecting SS for a person who is dead, that's fraud. Well, San Diego has a lot of Spanish speaking residents. Legal and illegal. Not a whole lot of, say, Korean speakers there, so not a whole lot of need for Korean speaking bank tellers.
Know where there IS a large number of Korean speaking bank tellers. Annandale, VA. Suburb of DC. Has a HUGE (legal) Korean population. Known as "Little Korea" around DC.
They have a lot of Korean speaking bank tellers, dry cleaners, restaurant workers, 7-11 employees,.etc...
I know this because I lived in Annandale for a couple years and my husband did tutoring on the side for HS SATs, and had a metric fuck ton of Korean students. We made some really good close family friends (one of the kids he tutored in HS is now a 36 year old DC police officer and we talk at least a couple times per month, go to hockey and soccer games together, etc..) and have learned a bit of Korean ourselves. Also learned the importance of having a special refrigerator just for your kimchi, why EVERYONE should have a Zojirushi rice cooker, and why gimbap is better than sushi.
Also, the neighborhood we're in right now has a lot of Ethiopians. So, lots of Ethiopian speaking bank tellers, etc...
My point isn't that Spanish speakers aren't being treated better than everyone else, just because they're Spanish speakers. Just that there are more Spanish speaking people in the US than other (non-english) languages. Out of ALL non-English language speakers in the US, over 60% of them speak Spanish. And where you are is a big factor in what languages you're likely to hear. For instance, if you go to San Francisco, you'll probably hear a lot of Chinese. Go to places with a lot of Amish or Mennonites, and you'll probably hear a lot of German. Go to some RI or MA fishing communities and you'll hear Portugese.
It's not surprising that San Diego has Spanish speaking bank tellers. And it's nothing out of the ordinary.
I get the fact that if a person lives in the US, they should learn English. I 100% support that. But everyone that comes here isn't going to be able to speak fluent English the second they step foot here. Also, even if they DO eventually become fluent, sometimes it's more comfortable for them to speak in their native tongue, especially when it comes to important stuff like money.
Reading through this forum, there's a big sentiment on people here ONLY wanting to hear English, and nothing else. That's just asinine. It's not realistic.
If you've ever worked abroad, or been in the military stationed in other countries, you'd have a more realistic expectation of foreign languages being spoken in the US. Because I can 100% guarantee that every service member and their families, along with every US citizen working in foreign countries is nowhere close to being fluent in the languages of the country they're living in abroad. So let's not be hypocrites.

I'll also remind you that all of those states you listed as having Spanish speakers thinking they "own them" have had Spanish speakers there as the majority before those states were ever even part of the US. There are Spanish speaking families in those states who have been American citizens since the 1800s. I think a lot of people tend to forget that. Just because you hear them speaking Spanish in public doesn't mean they CAN'T speak English. They just prefer Spanish because they like it better. Doesn't make them any less American than you or me ( I literally had my ancestors come here on the Mayflower (not the first trip) and 100% of my DNA comes from western Europe and great Britain, before you start thinking I'm Mexican or something).
30 years ago Annandale didn't have a Korean town and Arlington and Fairfax didn't have a Vietnam town or a China town or a mexican town or enclaves of muslims. 50 years ago there wasn't a Mexican restaurant in Va or MD or Dc.

You might want to check your facts on the China town info. China towns have been around since at least the 1800s when Chinese first came over here to work on the railroads. There have been plenty of "x country" towns in America since America was formed.
And what does it matter if some of them are more recent? It's not like you think that being here a long time makes it OK, because like I said earlier, those states you complain about having a lot of Spanish speaking people belonged to Spanish speaking countries before they even became part of the United States. So Spanish has been spoken there longer than English. That makes no difference to you. So all this "so and so has only been around the last 30 years" bullshit is nothing but deflection. And mostly wrong at that!

My ancestors were not immigrants. They were settlers. They came to a land with no cities and no farms. They were settlers. They built the cities, the roads, the factories and the farms. Immigrants arrive to fully developed lands.
Folks can still speak whatever language they wish but English is our official language and government doesn't and shouldn't cater to non English languages. If foreign countries want to deport US citizens, it wouldn't be the first time and it's their right.

“Settlers” were immigrants. My ancestors didn’t teleport here from Plymouth. They migrated from Europe, settled, and displaced people already living here. Calling them “settlers” doesn’t make them a different species from today’s immigrants. It just sanitizes the word.
Spanish has been in the Southwest longer than the U.S. has. California, New Mexico, Arizona, Texas, etc., were Spanish/Mexican before they were American. There are Spanish-speaking families who’ve been American citizens there since the 1800s. Hearing Spanish in public isn’t a glitch in the Matrix; it’s what the map actually looks like. There were cities and civilization in the Southwest when the Spanish owned it. Are you going to claim the same "settler vs immigrant" stuff when Americans started moving into that territory? Do you think Americans just twiddled their thumbs at the border, waiting for the US to take control of that territory and make them into US states before moving there? Language services aren’t “special treatment,” they’re market logic. Spanish is by far the most common non-English language in the U.S., so banks, hospitals, and call centers provide Spanish help because it reduces errors and keeps customers. Same reason you’ll find Korean in Annandale, Vietnamese in parts of Northern Virginia, Portuguese in RI/MA fishing towns, Chinese in SF. It’s population math, not a conspiracy. This is done by private companies, btw, not "the government".
Birthright citizenship is constitutional, not optional. The 14th Amendment isn’t a suggestion. Kids born here are citizens. Period. Might want to be careful about talking against the US Constitution, because that gets you labeled as a terrorist here.
If your beef is wages, aim at the right target. It’s not Spanish at the grocery store that undercuts pay—it’s employers paying cash off the books and dodging payroll taxes. Enforce labor law and tax compliance and you remove the incentive to hire anyone—citizen or not—under the table.
About “English is our official language.” At the federal level, the U.S. has no official language. Plenty of countries get by just fine hearing more than one language in public. You’d find that out instantly if you lived abroad—Americans rely on English enclaves and translation every day. Let’s not be hypocrites about it here. Also, one of the main issues here is that people are automatically assuming that just because someone is speaking Spanish that they're here illegally. That is just asinine. That's the law that means hospitals deny emergency care, so anyone can walk in and get free treatment. In the old days, if you couldn't pay, then you suffered. People took personal responsibility for their healthcare. But now that you can just go to any ER, even if you don't have money, no one cares about that stuff. Imagine if you could go to Walmart and use their services, and they couldn't refuse. That's what's happening here. Yeah, you might end up with some people dying in the streets, but if that's what it takes to lower my deductible and live in true capitalism, then so be it.

It's only impossible if you confuse wants with needs. You don't need a new car, new cloths, or Starbucks coffee. Housing is cheap if you don't mind living in a trailer. Food is cheap, too. You can buy sacks of rice and beans that will last weeks, supplement a little with foraging and hunting. That's Something the kids love to do anyway, make it part of the home school curriculum. Stop going to the doctor for every little scratch. If you live simply and only get what you need, you can afford to home school. That's how many of us here were raised. It is only impossible on one income when you have car loans, student loans, credit cards, a tv, a washing machine and dryer, an automatic dishwasher. None of these things are necessities, plenty of generations before us lived without them and were perfectly fine.

While this is technically true I cannot make a reasonable income without access to a major city and it's high cost of living, even in exurbs, usually even with the sacrifice to quality of life and sanity that I would lose commuting to the place to make money.
General utilities, food and insurance have become so expensive that there is no quality of life even if I could afford them on a random job (usually we point at retail and service industry as the example of random job).
In much of the country, even fairly rural areas, a random employee starting at Walmart or McDonald's still doesn't earn enough to cover the essentials. Not everywhere, for example in Fargo, ND, wages even at service and retail are high enough to easily rent a reasonable place.
But this is just impractical for most people unless you already have no debt and some kind of assets. I totally understand why Gen Z is so hopeless even while thinking about it.
The problem is expectations. Have you noticed that immigrants don't complain about housing? They make it work. This might mean putting 14 people in a two-bedroom house, and driving everyone around in a van, but they seem to live in big cities just fine. Whenever I talk about this to Gen Z, they say I'm not being reasonable, and that they need their own privacy. No, you don't need that. I always had siblings as roommates growing up. I could only afford my first house because I had some friends living with me. Privacy is something you earn through hard work and dedication, and that is a hard lesson for young people.
