Another reason most people will just use their card to skip the minor inconvenience of having to argue with someone or a corp(se) for stealing your rightful money. This type of rationale will be used to further justify going to a cashless, digital currency based society.
It would be relatively easy to eliminate the penny in transactions, if it weren't for sales taxes.
Not a problem for retailers to price in .05 increments, but when you throw a (e.g.) 6.27% sales tax rate onto it - a rate that varies by state, county and city - well then you need pennies
That is only permissible in a system where both buyer and seller have AGREED to rounding. Without that agreement, a store rounding down is just stealing customers' money. If you let that happen, then you have let that happen.
Do you actually believe if the bill had been $10.52, the store would have simply accepted $10.50? LOL tell us another one
They should round down and up. $10.51 would be $10.50, and 10.53 would be 10.55
Get used to it, the government is no longer making pennys. Soon there won't be any pennys in circulation.
Everyone is doing this. If you tell them its theft they hand you the nickel. I use cash regularly. Home depot is just trying to figure it out, also I have never not been rounded up for if I say i want my penny.
There are literally billions of pennies in circulation and in jars and cans inside people's homes. People can be incentivized to bring them out if need be.
whats going to be fun is when they remove the nickel. If everyone starts rounding to the nearest nickel, then we'll need more nickels in circulation, which are far more expensive to produce.
Had similar experience at Hobby Lobby. But they had a cup on the counter with some change, remember "need a penny, take a penny"? But cashier said they round up the charge (not the change) and I said that's stealing they should round down the charge.
I remember years ago K-Mart had kitchen utensils for sale 3 for a dollar but cashier was charging 34 cents each. I stopped her and without even a blink she called her supervisor who came with a change purse and handed me 2 pennies for each group of 3. No questions asked.
They know when they are cheating customers. Penny wise, pound foolish.
At this point, I say just boycott Home Depot.. I have NEVER had a satisfactory time/item at HD in 30 Years! Not once. I only end up there once or twice a year when I'm at someone elses mercy. Just say NO to Home Depot.
do you seriously not know this? pennies havent been made of solid copper since the 80s. theyre like 99% zinc with an ultra thin copper shell.
I think its 82 or 83 when they switched to zinc. the solid copper pennies have 2 or 3 cents of copper in them. modern zinc ones still contain less than a cent of metal, at melt value, but the process of making them costs several cents.
Just stand there, hold up the line until a manager gives you your proper change. Enough people do this. It’s gonna cost them a lot more money than it would’ve to just get the right change.
Just have list prices be the actual prices. other countries do it that way. The price tag should be what you pay at the counter.
The idea that customers will see the amount of taxes they pay and demand some real change on tax policy sounds like a good idea but it hasn't worked at all.
Vendors want to be able to sell things for 499.99 though because, to the retarded consumer, thats obviously a much better deal than the store next door selling it for 500 even.
My wife has a degree in marketing and it is honestly infuriating when you realize that the reason most things suck is that theyre designed that way to because thats what retards (the average consumer) responds best too.
Another reason most people will just use their card to skip the minor inconvenience of having to argue with someone or a corp(se) for stealing your rightful money. This type of rationale will be used to further justify going to a cashless, digital currency based society.
I was thinking of that too.
Exactly right. Ending the Penny is one of the very, very few actions of the Trump administration that I consider Stupid.
Save some money right now but yeah, understand.
It would be relatively easy to eliminate the penny in transactions, if it weren't for sales taxes.

I would not mind not having sale tax but in Oregon, no sale tax, and they charge you for a shopping bag.
At $10.51 proper rounding would be $10.50. At $10.53 proper rounding would be $10.55.This is basic 1st grade math skills.
When it comes to people's money, you don't round down.
They did nothing to earn that penny. It's not theirs to take.

I know the pennies are going away.
Everyone is doing this. If you tell them its theft they hand you the nickel. I use cash regularly. Home depot is just trying to figure it out, also I have never not been rounded up for if I say i want my penny.
I use cash also but I have not been there for a while. The machine will make the exact change.
I've noticed stores rounding their price down to the nearest nickel. You pay less if cash, exact if it's with a card.
There are literally billions of pennies in circulation and in jars and cans inside people's homes. People can be incentivized to bring them out if need be.
There will not be anything like a "cent" in prices when the penny is gone. Everything will be priced to end with an "0" like 9.50, 9.55, 9.60. IMO
Canada took away the penny more than ten years ago. Look at us now! Stand your ground.
I see. I understand.
whats going to be fun is when they remove the nickel. If everyone starts rounding to the nearest nickel, then we'll need more nickels in circulation, which are far more expensive to produce.
more people will push for all digital currency.
we need to reset the system. Uncle Ted was right.
You are correct. And after the nickel, it'll be the dime. And then "who needs quarters? They're just wasteful."
This is the slippery slope to digital currency.
Back in 2000, a friend of mine was holding nickels even then.
Its all fake money anyway
Right.
All the more reason to return to a sound currency. Eliminating coinage isn't the answer.
Agree. Let's see what could be done.

Wow, you have experiences. I never had that b4.
If I get pennies for change, I leave them with the cashier.
Pennies here are like the aluminum yen coins in Japan. Except the Yen is even more worthless than the penny.
You might be able to sell the pennies later for content.
"If I get pennies for change, I leave them with the cashier."
Send them to me.
The copper is worth more than the penny. Thats why
Half of the 1982s and before are up to abot .03 cents ea. 1983 to now are copper plated zinc.
Yes of course.
They also round up, it has happened with me, when I was supposed to get 3 or 4 cents back they make it a nickel.
Good. I will pay attention.
This is a good time to be reminded of the joke, "How was copper wire invented?" (Answer: Two _ _ _ _ fighting over a penny).
I'll show myself out.
LOL
Sounds like stealing to me
Oh yeah.
At this point, I say just boycott Home Depot.. I have NEVER had a satisfactory time/item at HD in 30 Years! Not once. I only end up there once or twice a year when I'm at someone elses mercy. Just say NO to Home Depot.
I don't even have one in my town. When I have to do construction, they shipped it to me.
So is Wang-Mart.
Oh yeah.
I have some pennies I could sell them, at least a pitcher full.🤭
Howls.
Who TF cares if you are short a penny
I do. In 10 years, the copper will sell for a lot more.
theyre not even solid copper anymore
Is that right?
do you seriously not know this? pennies havent been made of solid copper since the 80s. theyre like 99% zinc with an ultra thin copper shell.

No. I did not know.
I thought it's real copper.
The zinc ones start dissolving once scratched to deep.
Understand.
sorry to bust your bubble then, friend
Just stand there, hold up the line until a manager gives you your proper change. Enough people do this. It’s gonna cost them a lot more money than it would’ve to just get the right change.
I usually just go thru the machine.
Been doing that for a while now.
I use the machine, they give you exact change.
Once they realize CUSTOMERS are stealing to make up the difference maybe they will stop STEALING from us!!
Well, unfortunately some customers have been stealing. I just don't want to steal from others neither do I want them to steal from me.
"Rounding DOWN" means you come out ahead. $9.53 means it cost you 9.50. At least that is what "rounding DOWN" means where I live.
They are rounding down your change, not the price... quite the opposite of you coming out ahead.
Could you give me an example of what you are calling "rounding down"?
They owe me $9.51 in change. They give me $9.50 in change. They 'rounded down' what they owe me due to no pennies. I lose out on the penny I am owed.
I see said the blind photobuf! I am easily confused at my age! Kek
Exactly.
Dang it feels good to be a gangster. Office space.
Yes.

Oh I know. It's a marketing scheme.
