I feel the same. I can speak Spanish fluently as a second language and I often have to hold back when I hear them speaking to each other and to their children in Spanish and I want to say to them to LEARN TO SPEAK ENGLISH. THIS IS NOT MEXICO!

I used to travel for my job internationally years ago and often found the locals scrutinizing me to see what my intentions were and how much I understood. They'd often attempt to cheat me or mislead me to their own benefit. I'd catch them and they'd immediately back pedal. It was quite interesting.
Also, whenever I hire construction workers for my projects that I have from time-to-time, it seems many are primarily Spanish speakers as their first language.
I don't let them know I speak it, until the very end when I pay them. When I speak to them in their language, they will act embarrassed and ask why I didn't tell them I could understand them. I just smile and say, 'There was no need. Your English was good enough.' Then they exchange furtive glances, worried about what I might have overhead while they were speaking casually to each other as they worked!

Meanwhile the West Indians who were baby mamas, got all kinds of benefits because of their kids, and as "single moms" were eligible for higher education in the field due to programs focused on single parents. Me, who worked like a dog, and had the sense and morals not to have a child out of wedlock, was offered nothing of the kind, although I was excellent at my work and had so many nurses asking why I did not go on in school. I did not go on in school because 80 hours of work a week left me a little exhausted, okay?
