I remember the heads of religions going down there which struck me as very odd.

What videos that are allowed to be produced also show interesting things.

Levels of infrastructure that don’t make sense or match what’s supposed to be there. Such as the small Research Outposts that are supposed to be a handful of buildings and tents home to a couple dozen people at their largest. Having Municipal sized Water Pipes and High Voltage Power lines that seemingly go nowhere. Tunnels restricted even to the staff posted there.

Different parts of the Continent are also subject to different levels of Security. Including parts where overflights are forbidden for any reason. Even in the event of emergencies. With some areas completely closed off to all but a handful of personnel from the Scientific Missions. Security can also run the gamut from your standard Rent a Cop there to break up fights among Scientists. To the scary Black Ops/PMC looking guys who’d probably have no qualms about disappearing anyone who gets too curious. Depends on the installation and posting.

It’s also been suspected numerous Defense Contractors and National Military’s maintain black sites there. That are technically illegal but tolerated because literally everyone has posts there.

In 2004-2007 there was a website called Big Dead Place, written by Raytheon contracted services workers. The site was a hoot, chronicling life in a big, dead place. They wrote about what it's like living in bunker conditions, and how they amused themselves. Cataloging all the McMurdo Station toilets and trying to defecate in them all, food and how they kept themselves in liquor, keeping an eye on the non serf residents (scientists). Funny stuff. I was sad to see it taken down.

I have to wonder if this gents demise may be connected to his contractor work on the Continent. Also, by having the rights bought, was it a bid for secrecy about Antarctica? Who knows?

Using a personal Starlink unit bypasses onboard controls, creates security risks, and undermines the ship’s ability to manage bandwidth, monitor traffic, and ensure accountability.

Legal vs. Policy Restrictions: It’s important to note that using Starlink in Antarctica is not illegal under international law. However, it is against the policies of the U.S. Antarctic Program (USAP), cruise operators, and research stations. Violations can result in confiscation of equipment, loss of internet access, or even being removed from the expedition.

Alternative Connectivity: Passengers can still access internet via ship-based satellite internet (e.g., Iridium or FleetBroadband) or NSF-approved networks at research stations, though bandwidth and reliability are limited, especially in remote areas. 

In short, the restriction is operational and scientific, not legal — driven by the need to protect sensitive research and maintain control over communications in a remote and regulated environment.
