We still use an HP laserjet printer we bought about 15 years ago. Through at least two new Windows versions, it keeps on ticking :) We actually have to fool Windows into thinking it is a more recent HP printer :) (another benefit of youtube "how to" videos :) )
HP used to make great equipment. I had always used them for printers, moved to them for servers back when Compaq shit the bed (Probably dating myself here)
But HP didn't stay the company it once was. I eventually got burned by HP's incompetence on the servers and switched to Dell and never looked back. Still bought HP printers for awhile though.
But much like new cars, it's difficult for me to justify buying a new printer. There hasn't been a major improvement in laser print quality in years and there are plenty of useable reliable used printers out there, and the consumables are cheaper. The subscription model and the overall decline in quality just make that decision easier.
Plus the consumer models are ultra-crap. I'd rather own a used Business or Enteprrise-quality device than deal with the clown show that comes with owning a new consumer-level device.
Wifey and I both needed newer laptops. I picked up a couple of Thinkpad T490s on ebay (there are plenty of other options). She's running Win 10 and I'm running Zorin linux. They do everything we need, are reliable, lightweight, plenty fast for us. Couple hundred bucks a piece plus a few replacement parts to compensate for wear and we're set for probably the next five years. There was nothing new on the market that even came close to justifying it's price and the headaches that would most likely accompany it.
I built my own desktop computer 13 years ago. It works fine. If anything breaks, I can fix it myself. In those 13 years, the only thing I've replaced is the hard drive. It started making noises a few years ago, and I cloned it to an SSD.
I don't keep "files" on the C: drive, only on external hard drives with multiple backups. The only real information on the SSD that I want to keep is my emails. I back them up occasionally. I also own my domains and email addresses.
The only problem we have is that for some reason, if you try to print more than one page at a time, after the first page, it doesn't feed the following pages correctly, and jams. To avoid that, you either just have to select individual pages to print one at a time, or do the slightly trickier work around, which involves selecting the whole document, and while it is printing, manually add single sheets of paper as each page is in the act of printing (and if you don't time it right, it will either jam, or stop because it doesn't think it has paper :) )
It's going to be the future for a while. The likes of Klaus and Ursula can't comprehend that not everyone is behoven to their digital prison. It doesn't compute in their Satanic Demonic child-eating brains.
Exactly, people acting like this is new or something. And here’s the thing, she’ll pay her $7. But she’ll be OUTRAGED about it! Welcome to the club darling. It only gets worse when you start acquiring more of what’s “yours”. The whole “they’ll own nothing” is spot on. That’s exactly what’s happening. But, at least I know it’ll all burn in the end. Best work on treasures in Heaven than here on Earth anyways.
Yeah...but it really boils down to how much you want/need it...How much you want to torture yourself & how much time/energy/ever dwindling life force you want to spend getting a damned gadget to work...AND for a limited time at that...
Keeping some legacy systems going is absolutely twisted and obscure - and often both complicated AND delicate/frail...It's all such bullshit...
I've got XP machines still running...not emulated...and they just run! and they have a working serial & parallel port...
One of our printers is HP. This video is misleading. You can CHOOSE to have a paid subscription (where ink/toner is supplied automatically), or you can opt out to buy your own ink/toner. It depends on how much you print. If you print A LOT - it's cheaper to have the subscription. CAVEAT: HP does restrict you to use ONLY HP BRAND ink or toner. 3rd-party knock-offs no longer work. Solution: Buy a Brother printer. Much better.
My HP printer doesn't require a subscription. It does want me to subscribe, but my printing is sporadic, so the ink would pile up and cost me a lot. One thing I dislike about the new printers is that they don't allow you to directly connect them to your computer. It's all wireless, so they require wifi. If the wifi goes down, you can't print.
BTW, you can't buy HP ink ahead of time, because there is a date code embedded in the cartridge. After the date passes, the printer won't recognize the cartridge. This also eliminates the possibility of third-party refill services. My very first inkjet printer was an HP (black only), that I bought in 1989. I could refill those cartridges myself with ordinary fountain pen ink for about 75 cents. I found the info on CompuServe, back before the internet.
I may have to do like Gibbs on NCIS and pull out my old dot matrix printer from the early 80s. I still have a bottle of ink and a re-inker machine.
HP sells printers so they can profit from the ink. That's why I bought a Brother MFC years ago. It will use any Brother or cloned ink happily, and has a great Auto Document Feeder which I use extensively. Consumer-grade HP printers are pure junk, but HP as a company is also pure junk, so it fits their business model I guess.
I have a lot of old hardware hanging around here. I still have several SoundBlaster cards and almost all the computers I've ever owned. My first one was a Timex-Sinclair from 1982. That entire system was only $88.
The general concept is "FINANCIALIZE EVERYTHING" or "MONETIZE EVERYTHING". Turn ALL HUMAN ACTIVITIES in LIFE into an Earnings Per Share (EPS), Return on Investment (ROI), Return on Assets (ROA), etc. calculation!
Thank you Wall Street Apes for this printer & printing information. HP and other printer/ink businesses can/do charge up to $100 (including tax) for black & colored water!
I am surprised the global drug cartels have not entered the printer & ink business! Think about it, printer & ink is LEGAL, you sell colored water, you sell this colored water in tiny cartridges, and these cartridges cost $50 to $100! The gross profit margins for this business are ridiculous! Being in the printer/ink business is more profitable than selling cocaine or crack on the streets!
Now we have Big INK (Printer INK) joining Big Pharma, Big NGO's, Big Food, etc.
BIG AUTO is NOW in the "FINANCIALIZE EVERYTHING" business. We are seeing a number of monthly recurring charges in new automobiles! Below is BIG AUTO!!!!!
From AI: Common Recurring Monthly Fees on New Vehicles Remote Services:
(1) Subscriptions for remote start, lock/unlock, and climate control via smartphone apps.
(2) Advanced Driver Assistance: Monthly fees for hands-free highway driving systems or traffic jam assistance.
(3) Streaming & Wi-Fi: Recurring charges for 4G/5G in-car Wi-Fi hotspots and data streaming services.
(4) Performance & Comfort Upgrades: Pay-to-unlock features like faster acceleration or heated seats/steering wheels.
(5) Security & Safety: Stolen vehicle location services and, in some cases, remote panic buttons.
From AI: BIG AUTO Key Considerations
(6) Free Trial Periods: Many services are free for a trial period (e.g., 1–3 years) before converting to a monthly fee.
(7) Cost Accumulation: These subscriptions can add up, potentially costing thousands over the life of the vehicle.
(8) Subscription Models: Some companies now offer "vehicle subscriptions," which are all-inclusive monthly payments covering the car, insurance, maintenance, and taxes.
From AI: "It is highly recommended to ask dealers for a list of features that require a subscription after any complimentary period expires.
This has been an issue for a while. That and every update bricking your 3rd party cartridge. Them claiming is for security and then hiring a company to make malware deplorable from a printer cartridge to prove the point, yet that hasnt happened in the wild and still hasnt from what I can tell, whats so strange is that if they didnt have the chips that make them "smart" in the first place they wouldn't be able to loaded with malware.

Beware: SSDs die suddenly without warning. No "making noises". Just dead. Data irretrievable (unless you pay a specialist and not always then).
I've been buying 4TB spinning drives for future insurance. I copy my SSDs onto them.
I don't keep "files" on the C: drive, only on external hard drives with multiple backups. The only real information on the SSD that I want to keep is my emails. I back them up occasionally. I also own my domains and email addresses.

I am old.
I still use a stone box occupied by a baby pterodactyl for all my printing.
You have to change the beaks a lot! :0
Nice. You are so smart.
I checked the back, and it was dated 2004! HP1012 printer; a workhorse!
Smart = Dumb
Think Mirror
Trust me, I would rather be dumb. LOL

They and their pipe dreams.
Wait till she figures out things like vehicle registration, insurance, and property tax...

True
I hate printers
I like them but they are trouble.
Solution: Linux.
HPlib install -> print away.
However. A warning is fitting: Linux foundation is stuffed with big IT. So....be careful with updating. Know thy computer and OS.
Encouragement: Open source is just that: open source. And always check the license. Open source does not mean, free.
Alternatives/ lines of defense:

Thank you.

Good idea. Oh really good.

Damn, don't give any idea.
This girl looks mentally ill ...
I would become mentally ill too if I have to pay for subscription to print. lol

Anything that isn't a computer or phone that requires internet access is a trap.
Even a computer and a phone is a trap but yes, I agree.
