Makes it pretty hard to actually have a biz or save money or even do more than just basic survival.

YES! But an independent contractor has to work for more than one company for this to work. So get a side gig. Business still has to report their income on 1099 but not all the other onerous withholdings.
Yes, you understand this and you are correct, the whole mess, unemployment insurance too..I was a General Contractor, construction, in AZ, small business, commercial and residential licenses, millions in insurance and bond coverage just to open the doors!! Registrar of Contractors don't give those licenses away, it costs thousands. Then just try to figure out how to make a profit. I had an LLC/TAX Atty and a bookkeeper too..I was learning, boy did I learn. I would do cash only and no licenses, small jobs...word of mouth. I still have a business, chicken ranching..CASH ONLY.. and my "curtilage" sign that says in legal-eze stay the fuck off my property.

I did all the payroll and tax filings for YEARS! We finally got and PAID FOR a payroll company. How can the gov't justify making small business do THEIR business without compensation?? Theft of labor is a sin and a crime . . .
