From everything I've seen and heard, yes, I'm afraid it is. They sacrificed expressive character animation for "realistic" designs and lost a big part of what made the original work. At least the latter is still around.

Not true. Hamlet ends in tragedy with the royal family wiped out, the prince's girlfriend having drowned herself, and the survivors having to pick up the pieces as a new ruler takes over. The Lion King ends with good triumphing over evil, the rightful king taking his throne with his new queen at his side, and the heroes celebrating their victory while seeking to honor the fallen king.
