I had to look him up. Didn't start closely following hockey until shortly after he retired.

He averaged better than a point per game. For non-hockey Americans, that makes him a very good hockey player (especially for his era). Not that a person's athletic accomplishments should add credence to their "political statements" but the reality is, for a lot of people, they do. So, I think it's a reasonable assumption that his tweet carries additional weight in the minds of Canadians, especially (I imagine) for those living in Alberta.
