It's a bit naive to think that the church was 'infiltrated' just within the last 100 or so years. If you are going to go down the infilitration route, then you will have to widen the time span by at least 1000 years. Complaints about corruption within the church heirarchy is not a recent phenomena.
Its not like the reformation and the subsequent wars happened over just a few bad eggs within the vatican. Its a systemic problem, not helped by the fact that the vatican has a very shitty system of governance and law.
